How do you wash marks off the walls?

I don't even know how it happens (kids) but there are marks on the walls
I use zoflora solution spray and a sponge to get marks off the skirting, doors, etc. But what can I use on the walls? I've tried using baby wipes but it takes hours and takes the paint off.

Very clean cloth and Fairy liquid warm water.

MikeUniformMike · 13/02/2019 16:03

Zoflora is disinfectant not a cleaner, so unless the marks on the skirting boards are poo you shouldn't be spraying them. IIRC, Zoflora isn't something to spray around anyway as it has probably toxic ingredients
Magic erasers will clean marks of walls but overuse will remove paint.
Baby wipes tends to affect any sort of finish with repeated use.
If the walls are badly marked, wash with sugar soap and repaint afterwards.

And yes to the damp cloth with washing-up liquid in the water, that will do the skirting boards too.

I find a gentle run with cif cream will remove most things and doesn't damage paint

UserN0me · 13/02/2019 16:07

I second the Magic erasers!

AngelaStorm73 · 13/02/2019 16:07

It's not poo no. But gross kid stuff like snot/food/dribble/mucky hands. I used to just use antibacterial multipurpose spray but had the zoflora in anyway so switched to that because lots of illness lately so wanted it cleaner. It's diluted as instructed on the packet so not neat!

Will try fairy liquid and if that doesn't work then magic erasers

Washing up liquid on a sponge, or if that fails, CIF cream as it is slightly abrasive. Actually CIF is really good on wood too for the same reason.

WRT gross stuff, you are better scrubbing it with soap or CIF than using anti-bac or bleach. It is the scrubbing that removes dirt better, hence why we scrub/rub our hands to clean them !!

steppemum · 13/02/2019 16:13

I use neat liquid flash on anything stubborn, but the question is a little backwards, it should be

when you have small children, which paint do you use on walls that is washable Grin

I have learnt the hard way, and now only use the durable washable paints, they come in a matt finish and can be washed down vigorously!

AngelaStorm73 · 13/02/2019 16:14

I'm not allowed to paint! Private rental so I have to leave it as I found it too Sad

Magic sponge.

steppemum · 14/02/2019 09:57

anti bac and zoflora etc are primarily disinfectants.

Flash/washing up liquid/ washing powder are primarily designed to cut through grease and lift dirt.

personally I wouldn't use CIF on walls, if they are painted with normal emulsion, as it will remove paint, as it is abrasive, works fine on woodwork. And I disagree that it is primarily the scrubbing action, washing up liquid and flash cut through the grease, and lift it off. (good to use washing up liquid on food grease stains on clothes for the same reason, pre-wash, or plain shampoo)

Unfortunately though, purple crayola felt tip doesn't respond to either, and takes 4 coats of paint to cover it (I'm not bitter, no, not me)

Magic Erasers!

AngelaStorm73 · 14/02/2019 10:15

@steppemum

I know I'm wondering if I'm just going to have to take the cost when I move out, but I really can't afford to. I got most of the crayon off with baby wipes, thankfully, and have since developed a "supervised only" colouring policy. But it does feel like a losing battle at times.

Magic erasers are great but as suggested overuse on one spot will thin the paint. However you don't need to scrub too hard to get marks off. They are cheap as chips too.

sidesplittinglol · 14/02/2019 20:15

Mr Sheen and a cloth worked wonders cleaning marks and Crayon off my walls. Worth a try. Much better than anything else I used.

AngelaStorm73 · 14/02/2019 21:26

Bought some magic erasers. Did try and get off with cloth and hot water and fairy liquid but left drips on the walls (think cloth was too wet)
Going to wait for it to dry and then use the magic erasers.
