Tumble drier filter - Is it only me that didn’t know...

So there was a burning smell coming from the drier and it would cut out after about 30 mins. I’d cleaned the filter at the front even going so far so force my hand in the filter slot where more fluff had accumulated. (Drier is at least 8 years old). Still burning smell and still cutting out. I couldn’t get hold of a repair guy so did some googling and apparently you should vacuum out the fluff from inside the machine occasionally! Well I couldn’t get the back off to do this but instead disconnected the vent hose from the back and stuck my hand in. The whole inside of the drier was a mass of fluff! I pulled out heaps of it then stuck the vacuum cleaner nozzle and got out as much as I could. No more smell and no more cutting out. But when I think of all that flammable fluff inside the drier...

Thank you, OP. We've had our condenser dryer for 3 years and I only now have deigned to read the cleaning instructions. I bet it's super happy now after its first ever clean.

I can't pull my tumble dryer out. !

I dp the big filter in the door and have little rim ones and one bottom right hand corner. Is that OK? Or is it an accident waiting to happen Sad

My condenser has 2 filters to clean. The fluff filter and every so often the condenser. Light comes on and need to wash the condenser which is covered in fluff.

Hmm. I have a new-ish heat pump dryer and it doesn’t have a removable filter apart from the lint-collector thing. I’ll have to look into this as I remember our previous condenser dyer’s big filter used to get absolutely filthy so all that stuff must be going somewhere

I hope it doesn’t go the same way as its companion washing machine that also had no filter- something I didn’t realise until it kept having a draining fault and there was no way to unblock it! It lasted less than 2 years Angry Zanussi POS!!! Angry

Sorry for the off-topic rant 😬

MayFayner-if it’s anything like mine, it’s suppossidly self cleaning. I have a self cleaning condenser heat pump Bosch. Just have to empty the water and the fluff thing on the inside of the door.

Snowflakes1122 · 10/02/2019 14:27

supposedly even

MayFayner · 10/02/2019 14:41

snowflake I hope so but I have an inkling it needs some intervention or other.

I wish it was a Bosch one, I replaced the washing machine with a Bosch and it’s fantastic.

Kazzyhoward · 10/02/2019 14:44

It was recommended in the instruction manual for ours.

Mine is a condenser, so door filter is cleaned after every use, heat exchange thing is the first Monday of the month so I never forget. I have a laundry schedule.

I put a couple of sheets of kitchen roll in the bottom of the sink and run the heat exchanger under the tap. Once all the water has gone down the drain the kitchen roll and all the fluff is picked up, squeezed out and binned. Easy clean up.
