How can I get dried glue out of a carpet please?

Just that really. Had a vinyl floor fitted. The dog walked in the glue and then on the carpet on the landing. Now have glue paw prints on pale grey carpet! Any advice gratefully received!

Maybe try and melt the glue with a hairdryer and then soak it up with kitchen roll? This will depend on the type of glue I would imagine though.

Nail polish remover. It has to contain acetone. Test it somewhere out of the way first incase it changes the colour of the carpet. It definitely works, I got glue off jeans with it without a problem.

Thanks both. I'll give them both a try. A friend recommended melting the glue with an iron but am worried I'll end up with iron shaped burns on top of the stains!

I was going to suggest acetone or alcohol. If the carpet is polypropolene, I'd leave it.

If you’re going to melt it with an iron put brown paper over it first, otherwise you get a burned carpet and a gluey iron.

Depending on what glue it is, try spraying it with WD40 which should break the glue up, leave for a few seconds and then quickly wipe it with a damp cloth. Try and limit the WD40 to only where the glue is. Maybe put a finished loo roll over the glue mark and spray into the loo roll if you know what I mean. Also, test the WD40 on a bit of out of the way carpet first.

MikeUniformMike, would it be dangerous to use acetone on polypropylene carpet?

I've no idea! It's in nail varnish remover and beauty tips say to use a non-acetone remover so presumably it's not wonderful for nails. Then again, when I used a baby wipe it removed my nail varnish.
I would test it on an inconspicuous area first.

This stuff

Used it on carpet adhesive. Was very good.

Baconsarnie · 04/02/2019 11:34

Just bought that Wildcate, thank you! Will report back...

No worries. Don’t scrub too hard with it as the scrubbing action will trash the carpet.

Let me know how you get on.

Also worth using a very sharp pair of scissors to cut the very top (1mm) of the carpet pile off,of that doesn’t work.

Good luck!
