Fabric conditioner with babies/young children

Hello! Wondering what fabric conditioner other people use with baby/ toddler clothes?
Ive been using the white comfort or fairy as I thought you needed to just in case of sensitive skin but is it actually a requirement? I just want to use some nice smelling fabric conditioner! The baby friendly ones leave no smell once the clothes are dry. Im not talking about switching to the heavy 'perfumey' ones here either, just ones in the range of yellow lenor.

It became a thing when large organisations realised they could make money out of it. God knows what's in it and where it goes when it's rinsed away.
Horrible stinky stuff.

I use Ecover when it's necessary (ie, not on towels, bedding, fleecy things, etc - just woollens or things that go crispy without it). It's gentle, smells nice and doesn't confuse butterflies into laying eggs on the washing rather than their natural food source.

Both OH and myself have Psoriasis and I react strongly to most fabric softeners, washing powders and most of all, the slime that is laundry liquid.

I use white vinegar in replacement of FC in all my washes.

Watch your seals, then. Vinegar rots rubber. I only use it on towels to ensure maximum absorbancy.

I never knew there were such strong opinions on fabric conditioner!

Me neither. Grin

I can tell when we don't use it, not because of the smell but because we live in a hard water area, the clothes/bedding isn't as soft.

I love the smell of clean laundry in general and especially Comfort Pure.

RiverTam · 24/01/2019 09:01

there was an AMA a while back with someone who worked developing laundry detergents, it was very interesting! She said that whilst the benefit of FC was that it helped the laundry dry more quickly and aided ironing, the main selling point in the UK was the smell, not the performance of it.

But personally I would say the smell is the main thing that puts me off! And is also the main factor with regard to skin reacting to it - it's the perfume (and rinse cycles on short washes not being adequate).

I’m pretty sure it’s not made of animal fat any more. I had this conversation with a vegetarian friend who said she’d checked it out and it’s now artificial ingredients only.

Harebellmeadow · 24/01/2019 12:44

Also cannot bear FC - awful chemicals and synthetic fragrances. Just a rinse of vinegar (leaves no smell) or a few drops of lavender oil and then tumble dry to half dry, leaves them soft and fluffy.

Harebellmeadow · 24/01/2019 12:47

Just read poutysprouts comment - never had this, has anyone else had the vinegar rot the rubber?
Always use high temperature washes, and leave the doornand tray open afterwards to allow the machine to dry. Haven’t noticed any rubber rot due to a a vinegar rinse.

QueenAnneBoleyn · 24/01/2019 12:52

Comfort Pure. Love the smell of it.

MeetOnTheledge · 24/01/2019 13:09

I used to do a hot service wash with vinegar once a month and my door seal split.

I have. As have several others that have posted on other threads. Hmm

I use Ecover it leaves the clothes feeling nice but dosent stink.

Someone is probably going to tell me it's made of Cats Tears now aren't they

HauntedPencil · 24/01/2019 18:40

Honestly being pissy with people over stuff like this is so unproductive

jellyelly · 25/01/2019 00:59

I don’t use fabric softener, not for any major reason (mainly just because I never have so don't miss it!), but I do find that towels washed with it don’t dry me as well. Am I the only person with that issue?!

PookieDo · 25/01/2019 01:15

My water is way too hard not to use any at all but I don’t go mad and just use sensitive skin ones

RiverTam · 25/01/2019 07:52

haunted how so? Do you think it's better to go through life ignorant? Lots of people like to be as informed as possible before spending our hard earned cash.

Lots of nasties have been removed from products thanks to this kind of information sharing.

Harebellmeadow · 25/01/2019 07:57

Here here rivertam
There is no harm in asking and explaining. It is not a personal attack when the harms of softener are explained.
