What temperature do you wash your bedding on?

So I nearly always, wash bedding at 60
degrees. But a few days ago I had a new washing machine installed which has a bedding setting on it. You can set it to either 20,30 (definite no for bedding imo) or 40, no 60 😏 so I used another setting and washed at 60!

My question is, is it okay to wash bedding at 40? Does it get them clean enough?

Change my bedding weekly, clean pj’s every night etc so I can’t imagine my bed sheets are overly dirty but like to be sure and wash hotter. 💁‍♀️

60 for bedding and towels

Rubusfruticosus · 15/01/2019 18:34

40 for bedding, towels, and tea towels. Sheets and towels washed weekly, rest of bedding fortnightly (or less).
30 for clothing, occasionally 40.

We have survived washing with nothing but cold water for 18 months before.

Most of ours go to a laundry so above 60. No real need to though - particularly if you iron bedding. I’d not want to reduce guest towels or bedding below 60 but if you use the same bedding and nobody has scabies or impetigo, it’s probably fine at a lower temperature. In summer hanging laundry out in direct sunshine will reduce risk of transmitting pathogens too.

60.... it kills dust mites, fungal spores etc.

Starlight90 · 16/01/2019 15:59

I wash everything on 60. Don’t believe a cold wash cleans clothes especially the clothes i have to wash.

fussychica · 16/01/2019 16:38

All whites including bedding on 50, sometimes 60.
Darks and coloureds 40
Quick wash items 30.

What is the problem with dust mites? I mean apart from the thought? Genuine question- I'm incredibly lazy and I won't even admit how often I wash the sheets, I also only wash at 30 and have never had any ill effects

greenelephantscarf · 16/01/2019 16:57

dust mites/their feces are allergy triggers
if they were a food ingredient they would need to bd labelled.

Bumblebee39 · 18/01/2019 19:53

40

Unless everybody has the lurgy

I wash everything on 40 except for whites occasionally and 30 for some delicates

I do put the machine on a hot wash (with an old towel in only) to get the machine clean about once a week though

WhentheDealGoesDown · 19/01/2019 18:06

If it was just me in the bed I would wash at 40 but DH is shall we say is somewhat greasy and seems to leave greasy marks and a slightly yellowed pillow case, so always 60. And biological powder

SuziQ10 · 19/01/2019 18:16

I wash DC bedding at 40, and all our clothes.
But our bedding at 50 usually, sometimes 60, on a 1hr40 cycle

dinkydolphin · 19/01/2019 18:21

90 with zoflora on an intensive wash!

Passmethecrisps · 19/01/2019 18:24

I go for 60 most of the time with a very occasional 90 if truth be told. The reason is we live on the edge of a farm and have two utterly filthy cats who like to dive into our bed straight from the outside. Every once in a while I just feel it needs a damnedgood boil.

DeRigueurMortis · 19/01/2019 19:31

Hot as it will go - so 90 here.

That said we have eczema/asthma to deal with in this household so I deliberately bought a washing machine with an allergy wash cycle that washes at a high temperature and does multiple rince cycles.
