Is there any way to clean mould off squirty bath toys without discolouring them?!

Well-meaning relatives gave DD a load of squirty bath toys a few months since. She absolutely loves them and has given them all names so throwing away is a no-no. After every bath I squirt residual water out and leave them propped on their sides to dry.

They are still full of mould inside Hmm one is a pink pig and another a yellow chicken and you can see dark shadows thru the plastic.

Is there any way to soak or clean them to get rid of the mould that won't discolour the plastic?

This way only madness lies. The number of things I tried. You just have to chuck them out. It's mould and you don't want that in their mouths. Don't bother replacing them. They are all the same. You just have to invest in hard plastic bath toys or keep them out of the bath and play with them elsewhere

Milton maybe?

MoreHairyThanScary · 05/01/2019 20:21

We were really hot on mould on bathroom toys ( dd has a chronic condition ) there is no way to stop it once it's started. You could replace them discretely ( but hot glue gun the squirty hole) or replace with solid toys.

Can you make the hole bigger to make it easier to clean the inside? Soak in Milton or mild bleach solution for a couple of hours. Alternatively, my cousin puts hers in the dishwasher on a hot wash - she has also enlarged the hole (that sounds a bit rude!) and it seems to work.

Ooh dishwasher sounds like an idea! Afraid Milton would fade them.

Better faded than mouldy

HG spray

Miraculous on mould

Footle · 05/01/2019 23:10

HG spray is miraculous on mould but you wouldn't allow a child anywhere near it, let alone risk it getting on their skin or mouth.

There's not much you can do once they get mouldy, but if you get some new ones, get into the habit of squeezing them in some Milton solution every couple of days -really helps to stop the mould starting to grow inside.

Stronger-than-usual solution of Milton, squash the toy down as much as you can before submerging so it sucks the Milton into it. Fill them all up like that and leave them a couple of hours. The colour is very unlikely to bleach out. I have three year old bath toys that I do this with regularly. Obviously rinse v well, scooshing plain water in and out of them, before returning to service.

Milton doesn’t fade them. We had a set of ‘special’ Hmm ones from some museum or other which I resurrected many times. Bit of a pain....

Use Milton solution and make sure you return a couple of times to squeeze/squirt the solution in and out. Rinse and rinse and rinse very well.

When they are clean and next bath time is over put the toys as well emptied as possible on the radiator, balanced hole upwards, to dry a bit before putting away. Limiting to a couple toys at a time makes this faff easier.

I couldn’t wait till they got bored of them generally life is a bit too short!

villainousbroodmare · 06/01/2019 00:09

That's for sure!

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 06/01/2019 14:48

Hmm okay might be brave and Milton a couple!

Yes these are "special" plastic crap from a French toy store so don't think I cam find them again in UK
