In her book, Marie is really confident that once you have totally Kondo'd the shit out of your home, you'll never go back to being cluttered again.

So basically you'll never fall off the wagon.

Has this been true in your experience? Has anyone out there TOTALLY gone through their entire home following her method, got rid of all the clutter and been really happy, only for it to reappear?

She says something about it "clicking" I think - has been a while since I read the book and attempted to kondo. There are some areas that I definitely need to go over, and I will probably go through all the categories anyway, but some areas (of the miscellaneous category) that have definitely "clicked", seem complete, and there is some satisfaction in looking at the items which have found their place.

Have you seen she has a program on Netflix?
I am strangely drawn to it.

It's the new series that has made me want to do it all again!!

Definitely changed my life and I have not gone back to clutter. I still do it a couple of times a year and have less to throw out each time. More important for my sanity was that my nightmare hoarder DH started the process too. 40 years of paperwork went, freeing up two built-in cupboards.

The biggest things that have me are,

Same things in same place
No guilt about getting rid of sentimental items
Looking at my clothes and asking myself “ Would you buy that now?”.

Financially I am better off as I question purchases. Do I need it and where will I put it?

SemiAquaticEggLayingMammal · 03/01/2019 22:44

I'm hopeful then florentina!

I'm off the wagon 😂😂 I think I'm naturally quite lazy and after a few months I couldn't be bothered folding my pants and socks anymore. However, my t-shirt drawer has remained in tact and I do make the effort with that.

Well you have to keep at it - I mean, clutter still enters your house, kids toys, mail etc. But when you have a place for everything it really is much easier to keep on top of it. I am naturally minimalist and my DM was very minimalist so I suppose I don't hoard, but DH does so I have had to let him keep his stuff, but he did clear his wardrobe after seeing mine. The playroom still gets full but I have a box for each type of toy so it is easy to tidy.
Once you do the sentimental stuff you will never have to redo it - you can just do it as it arises, but I still haven't done this part (still too raw after Dm died and DF soon after so quite a few little bits to sort). However, I am reorganising my living room and removing an old sideboard (replacing with built-in cupboards) so I will face it in Spring and get it done.

I also buy way fewer clothes since I did the big tidy up.

I can vouch for it as far as clothes go - I 'kondo'd' all of ours a few years ago when the book first came out and it's just automatic now to store clothes in the correct way, even the kids do it as it's all they've ever known. It's also difficult to accumulate more than we have space for, as you can instantly see what you have and when you've reached capacity.

Komono is where I struggle - it's easy to find more items creeping into the house / onto surfaces, and becoming used to them being around.

But one thing I've learnt from both MK and other organisation gurus is that containment is key. You have to be very specific about where items belong, which often means having a range of appropriately sized boxes or trays within drawers and creating your own little systems for which subcategories fit into them. It's a game changer!

I watched one of the programs today. I think I love her.

TyrionsNextWife · 07/01/2019 19:54

I found that after I finished the whole process I was much fussier about what came into the house, so I only buy stuff I really want - it means that I have very little clutter anymore and I don’t spend money on rubbish!

As I’m much more aware of what I buy, I don’t really have any need to Kondo anymore. I’m getting good at getting rid of stuff as soon as it’s served it’s purpose as well which helps a lot, before I was really bad for hanging onto things ‘just in case’.

Neoflex · 07/01/2019 21:23

I've just seen the first episode and now I already want to read the book. I don't have much clutter because me and my family live in a box flat but I am fascinated nonetheless
