I smashed my hob

Absolutely gutted.

Had a lovely new kitchen this summer, and whilst using a cast iron casserole I dropped the lid on the induction hob.

I could cry, I'm so upset with myself.

Anyone know if this kind of thing is covered in contents insurance?

Never claimed on it so completely clueless.Sad

might be.
give them a call.

Sexnotgender · 03/01/2019 18:35

If you have accidental damage cover then I’d give them a call and see what they say.

Maybe83 · 03/01/2019 18:36

Depends on your level of cover you need to ring them.

I smashed my glass oven door cleaning it and claimed on the insurance and they replaced it. The first one didn't work properly so they gave cash instead and it more than covered the cost of the original. However, my premiums leapt up the following year.

Phalarope · 03/01/2019 18:44

Presumably it’s still under warranty? Ours is Neff with a 2-year guarantee - they were v helpful and sent an engineer round in a couple of days to replace the glass. They didn’t charge because it didn’t appear to be from something dropping on it (we don’t know how it cracked) but if it had been it was about £100 for new glass plus another £100 for the callout which would have been cheaper than claiming on the insurance. Don’t panic!

redsummershoes · 03/01/2019 18:59

warranty is for product faults, not accidental damage.

Bananas87 · 03/01/2019 19:13

The whole kitchen was done by a local family run company. They were so lovely so I will give them a call in the morning. If the glass can be replaced it would be amazing because I imaging it would be cheaper than replacing the whole thing- I don't know if it will be possible though, I have chucks of glass missing off it.
It's so upsetting to when something breaks.

Will get DH to check the level of cover for accidental damage. Is it a long process? Just thinking how long I am likely to be Hob-less

Thank you for replying!!Smile

redummershoes yes hence the charge if it were accidental damage, but going to customer support from the manufacturer is a good first step for something new: the whole system is set up for quick repairs and they can give you specific advice that eg the insurance can’t.

Phalarope · 03/01/2019 19:26

Also we don’t have accidental damage on our insurance policy but it turns out ours includes smashed induction hobs as standard, so presumably it happens a lot!

Bananas87 · 03/01/2019 19:33

Maybe it does happen a lot!!
DH bought a lovely cast iron casserole dish yesterday. The casserole dish came out perfectly (has 15 years warranty) but my lovely hob... I will look up contact details for AEG customer services see if they can support x

Update* contacted insurance company and it is covered but the excess is £350, which is more than it would cost me to replace the hob.
So I'll be looking to buy a new one.
Contacted the company and they said that often the parts and labour cost more to repair than to replace the hob as it has to be done by AEG
