I’m almost done with Marie Kondo’s book and I am buzzing with excitement about transforming my home by letting go of old belongings.

This morning I went through my clothes (not shoes, bags coats or scarves yet) and got rid of 2.5 100L bin liner’s worth! I already can’t believe how much space I’ve created.

Planning to do the second half of clothes tomorrow and then convince DH to do his. I’ll do DS’s one day next week when he is back at school (will be impossible with him in the house).

Going to try and go through the categories in strict order and devote at least one of my 2 free afternoons a week to it until I’ve been through everything in the house.

DH has agreed to watch the Marie Kondo series on Netflix with me and I’m hoping he will get involved.

I really think this will improve my mental health and make me calmer and happier.

Marking place! My KM ambitions have been derailed by life but I know it's in me to do this!

SemiAquaticEggLayingMammal · 28/01/2019 19:56

Do you think Marie will strike me off if she sees me now, viewing my clothes mountain and really not doing anything about it whilst eating ice cream straight from the tub? (That I might keep because ice cream tubs come in quite handy)

AmIAWeed · 29/01/2019 10:22

If they are pretty ice cream tubs I think it could be allowed ;)
Do they spark joy?!

SemiAquaticEggLayingMammal · 29/01/2019 19:19

The ice cream sparked a lot of joy, not so sure about the tub though!

Hi all. I’m new to this, although my kitchen and some other areas of the house are already reasonably well organised, my drawers are definitely not, and the house in general could do with a good going over. Every bit I do brings such happiness. Smile

I just started this weekend! Haven't done all my clothes yet because I have too many to do in a day so taking out smaller amounts at a time. I already have a big bag heading to the charity shop and suddenly a lot more drawer space! Interestingly I can also see right away there's a definitely "look" to the clothes I'm keeping - ruthlessly getting rid of all the colours I don't really like.

This is likely to take a while (I have a lot of stuff!) but as Marie says in episode 2 "it will be completed!".

I took in an Ikea delivery yesterday and DD now has three extra drawers in her wardrobe. Not the same colour but never mind! There is only one thing I can say right now and that is fuuuuuuuuuuck my DD has so many clothes! I've got rid of two bags of too small clothes already but the wardrobe is still full and I'm finding things I bought in last years sale that she has grown into that I'd forgotten about Blush

How do you sort kids (DD's) clothes? At the moment I've one drawer of trousers/leggings, one of short and long sleeves t-shirts and one of sports clothes and summer clothes that she doesn't need right now. I don't know whether to hang her dresses or not. She rarely wears dresses, if I hang them, she can't reach them so will definitely never wear them!

What about outfits? If you've leggings that go with a specific top do you put them together in a separate drawer? Usually she just grabs a t-shirt and leggings from the shelf and I had her outfits on a separate shelf folded together but she rarely took them.

I have slowed right down the last week as I am deep cleaning and decorating as I go. Today I paint the bathroom ceiling. I have a list of areas that haven't yet been done and we have family coming in half term so I've essentially 1 week to get the spare room sorted...which is where I am dumping stuff to go in the loft, shed, garage and of course my husbands mountain of clothes :(
The kids rooms are back to being disgustingly messy. 3 glasses in my daughters room, clothes all over the floor, curtains not opened, bed not made, seriously considering stopping her birthday sleepover if she cannot get on top of this and maintain it.
I can confidently say though the utility, kitchen, lounge, office and bathrooms have all remained neat, tidy and taking me less than half an hour to clean each morning. Even the washing is caught up on and maintained as I am getting more in a routine. That in itself is saving my sanity.

Good work team!

I haven’t done any real Kondo-ing in a couple of weeks but there are bits and pieces moving out of the house. Got rid of a dining table at the weekend and shifted furniture around between our downstairs rooms which was a huge task which required taking the sofa to pieces among other things. Also sorted out my dressing table in the bedroom which was a disgrace. That’s now clear and clean.

I’ve also been doing lots more cleaning than previously, but in short bursts. It seem easier somehow. I’ve also got around to booking appointments for myself that I’ve been putting off for 6 months + which is good but has been using up my free time!

Just been really short on time but I haven’t forgotten that I need to crack on, just got to carve out some time and/or break some things down into smaller chunks.

Paperwork is still all in a pile waiting for me to tackle it.

This weekend I’m super busy so won’t get anything done but Monday I should have a clear couple of hours and I’m pencilling in the paperwork mountain!

ohguesswhat anything that DS doesn’t wear I got rid of, even if it still fit. I’ve only kept stuff he does actually wear and stuff he still needs to grow into. There isn’t a lot of that though as I find I forget about it and it goes to waste. It’s only a few bits and pieces that MIL have bought.

All DS’s clothes are hanging as he has the space in the wardrobe now. I think hanging is better for him as he can see it all and get out what he wants easily. If it was all folded I think he would pull it all out on a regular basis.

I filled two 65l boxes with too small clothes Blush I am so ashamed! The wardrobe is still pretty much full - 29 shortsleeved t-shirts, 15 longsleeved plus what's in the wash all in her current size or the next size up. She does wear them all though so at least there's that. Ive rearranged everything so that she can reach all her clothes bar those hanging up. Before the lower drawer had too small clothes in and she couldn't reach her jumpers. She doesn't want to throw her too small fancy dress dress (that looks wrong!) so I found space in the spare wardrobe in the attic. Now I need to go through her toys...

viccat · 08/02/2019 17:39

I did some more of my clothes today and created lots of space in the wardrobe (to be filled when I go through what's currently in storage boxes...)

The whole "does it spark joy" thing feels a bit woo to start with but it's actually really helpful! I'm being more ruthless about items that have survived previous wardrobe sort out sessions but that I don't actually enjoy wearing. I'm planning to go through my sock drawer next Grin

BasinHaircut · 11/02/2019 17:00

Finally got around to my paperwork today. A whole recycling bag full of shredded paper and a stack of manuals and other shite for the bin.

No joy was sparked doing that bit I assure you!

I’m going to finish off my bedroom next, sheets, towels and a random drawer downstairs of stuff.

Then I think I’ll tackle the kitchen but will have to section it as it’s too much for one day.

After that it’s going to be mainly toys and the spare room. Then the loft and shed.

I've decided to do my sock drawer by not putting my clean socks back into it and leaving them in the (clean) laundry basket. That will force me to wear all my socks and if I don't want to or the have holes in they go straight in the bin. When the drawer is empty, then I'll put my clean ones back!

I did DS's wardrobe and it took me about half an hour Grin certainly simpler than DD's!

Now I need to do DD's toys and then my paperwork.

BasinHaircut · 14/02/2019 17:38

OhGuessWhat genius! Have to sort the socks that way!

I’ve done cleaning products today and reduced down from 4 locations to 2. One for cleaning stuff and one for laundry stuff. Got rid of everything I don’t use and about half of my cloths.

I’m currently cleaning the dishwasher and washing machine with some cleaning stuff I found that I must have had years. I’ve developed a bit of an obsession with Mrs Hinch over the past few weeks too so I can’t stop cleaning!
