How to declutter clothes?

I am fed up with most of my clothes. Many of them are fairly old, fairly cheap and just dull. I have so many random clothes but can never seem to put together an outfit from
them. Too much black, not enough colour. Oh and I’ve put on weight round middle so many things are a bit tight.

I’d like to start the new year by having a declutter and starting again. But I just don’t know how to do it. I can’t decide what to get rid of and can’t afford to replace my entire wardrobe!

I feel overwhelmed with clothes everywhere. Would rather have fewer clothes but nice ones.

Can anyone help please? I’m rubbish at this sort of thing.

Empty your entire wardrobe onto your bed. Split into tops, jeans, jumpers, etc. Sort into piles for keep, charity, and rags.

Are you likely to lose that weight?
I decluttered my clothes 2 years ago and got rid of a lot of nice too small stuff and now has lost weight!

Yes I am hoping to lose some weight. It’s a few pounds I’ve put on through sheer laziness. Trouble is my curent clothes are a bit uncomfortably tight but the next size up is too big! So not sure what to do..

I'm in a similar situation. Have put on a few pounds recently but hope to lose them. I won't chuck out too much as I'm afraid I won't find anything in the shops that I like, especially at this time of year when it's all sparkly Christmas stuff. I would start by chucking the really old, worn out stuff. Then look at what you've got, what goes together and what you actually wear most. If jeans are what you wear most days, look for a new pair and buy two, one black and one blue. Might be a good time to look for a good pair of boots on sale.

The best long lasting method is the Marie Kondo method. Buy her book or download on kindle. You just need the chapter on clothes. I’ve posted before on how I decluttered mine, I’ll try and repost it.

Start with what looks truly awful on you - colour/shape/style and then decide if it's good enough for charity or the bin. Bobbly/stained/holey are no-brainers

Be ruthless - I had some elasticated waisted/cuff lightweight jeans. They were so comfy but blimey they did me no favours, even for housework tasks! Charity shop they went - along with the cosy soft grey jumper I loved for cold evenings but it drained the colour out of me

Find the things you love in your wardrobe and that suit you - either the colour, style, fit etc and hang these round the room/lay on the bed. These will be what you build your wardrobe round

You'll be left with some in between stuff that you may need to keep because it makes an outfit up until you can buy something else but don't buy things to go with these items

Try using a personal shopper in somewhere like John Lewis. Stick to colours that you can mix and match and take photos along of the things you kept that you love to keep you focused (or take some items with you)
