Stockpiling in case of a Hard Brexit ....

Has anyone else started laying in supplies ? Reallly worries there will be shortages after Brexit in 29 March with disruptions st the borders and empty shelves in the supermarkets.

I’m thinking of laying in a couple of months worth of tinned stuff and dried goods. Also loo roll and cleaning stuff. But I’m worried that may not be enough .....

I saw a women put six tins of sardines in her trolley the other day. Our eyes met. Brexit? I said. She nodded.

I think my family would engage in human sacrifice rather than eat sardines!

"You are aware that hauliers etc will have a further 9 months after March - yes NINE months, to be able to come in and out? And after that they'll have to apply for permits" not the case if there's a no deal/hard brexit - which is increasingly likely with TM's postponing/refusing to properly deal with the issue!

"Why might energy supply be affected?" Because several of the energy companies are actually not uk owned. Despite apparent British sounding names the parent companies are often European.

It's appalling how ridiculously unprepared the govt are. They only started buying freezers to store extra food in November!

Imo - they shouldn't have triggered art 50 before making preparation plans, when they did they should have started organising space for stocks and stocking up THEN. But they didn't.

I've friends who are in jobs where they know how the supply chain & border control works and THEY are definitely stocking up! For me that says it all.

I've been asking my dr and pharmacist for last few months when I've ordered my repeat prescriptions what's the govt advice on meds - they've been told nothing yet. I'm on a medication it's dangerous to stop cold as is the case for many others too.

It's disgusting the lack of organisation.

I'm shocked at the lack of outcry about it too!

However you voted this govt has let everyone down.

I think we all need to keep our heads here. It’s not that food will cease to exist. The problem is the associated compliance paperwork, which will slow down transit for fruit, vegetables, dairy and meat. Processed store cupboard food and its ingredients will be more or less fine and this is being stockpiled by suppliers. So stocking freezers is a good idea to avoid living on tins like a constipated pensioner with no taste buds. Not because you’ll starve otherwise.

If people really start really thinking there’s major good shortages you will quickly get riots, something Governments get really freaked by. So I am currently not worried about starvation. I am worried about supermarket faff and mad women with trolleys at dawn fighting me for the last lettuce. Think of a snow day combined with a bit of Christmas Eve and you’ve got the picture of what shopping is going to be like during April.

That having been said, I won’t say I’m not deeply angry to be put in this situation. I sincerely hope the likes of Sarah Vine and Helena Rees-Mogg at the very least struggle to get their Ocado orders, should this come to pass.

I think my family would engage in human sacrifice rather than eat sardines!

I used to say that, but then DH tried a ‘mango chutney sardines’ recipe he found online. It’s the only way I will eat them though.

On the hauliers point - yes they can keep moving for 9 months - the problem will be the tariffs that will be applied from day one, the extra paperwork, etc. Meaning massive border delays, and therefore a huge interruption in ‘just in time’ deliveries.

cloudtree · 04/01/2019 21:19

If you stock up now that is likely to cause anyone any problems. Its just an insurance policy. If you wait until March/April everyone will be buying like crazy and then problems arise.

UK & France exchange a lot of electricity.

A great thing about fish... when you throw out a net you get all sorts of things back in. Some of the catch is fish British people eat (but Europeans don't eat). Some of those fish Europeans like to eat (But British people won't eat). So fisherpeople are very dependent, badly need, to sell their unwanted stock to the other group, in order to get full profits.

Any delay in transport, extra border barriers = big problem for fisherpeople keeping their produce fresh. post-Brexit British fisheries is much more vulnerable if delayed, b/c EU fishing boats will have more options where to sell any type of fish not wanted exactly where it's landed.

mumiron · 12/01/2019 19:22

Makes stockpiling frozen fruit and vegetables a bit pointless if the electricity goes! We are all up the creek without a paddle! These posts are truly scary. Anger at politicians is beyond words. They won't experience ANY of these worries or hardships.

I’m really surprised at this thread. I had no idea people were stock piling. No one I know is. Quite interesting reading.

twilightcafe · 12/01/2019 19:46

I was in Morrisons earlier. Hardly any oil, rice, pasta or tinned tomatoes on the shelves. Could be coincidence but I think people are stockpiling on the sly.

Thatsalovelycuppatea · 12/01/2019 19:48

I think stocking up will cause a shortage. It's like those selfish people at Christmas and there is nothing left for others who have to shop on Christmas Eve. Re food not presents.

Please head over to the Preppers topic for sensible budget friendly advice on what to do.
Apologies to anyone who had read this before:
Imagine you are snowed in for three days. Imagine what food you want actually eat and think about storing it. Either freezer or shelf stable versions. Think about hygiene needs like toothpaste and sanpro. Think about treats and snacks. Think about pets. Think about entertainment. What works for you.
I suggest three days because it gives you a chance to suss out your local situation without having to worry about going to shops to get bog roll. If you want to do more, there's loads of threads about this. Or head over to the Prepper topic. Lurk. Ask for advice. As suits you.
I'm a prepper. You don't have to Become a Prepper.

I live in the country we always have several meals available. Our village has been cut off by floods for several days and odd snow days where you need a four wheel drive to be safe. I no longer have a freezer because it gets as low as -25 and mine was in the shed. Most domestic freezers are no longer guaranteed below -15 and it regularly gets that in winter. There’s always the pub!
It is a real community effort if the electric goes off and there is no mains gas. The people with solid fuel are very popular and you end up cooking several families dinners. Everyone has a few bottles as well so a merry time is had by all.

If Parliament approves the ‘Brexit Deal’ prior to Brexit then, yes, there will be a transition period until December 2020, during which it is intended that the new regime can bed down.
If Brexit occurs without parliament approving the ‘Brexit Deal’, then NO – there will be no transition period.

Relaxing the certification requirements for hauliers will not relax the need for new customs controls at entry ports.
Unilateral relaxation of customs on imports at entry ports to the UK would have little practical logistical value unless matched by similar relaxation at entry ports to the EU (extremely unlikely) – hauliers would not enter the UK if they knew they would have to queue for days to get back to Europe.
