How do I get the toilet properly clean?

Our toilets have started to have a kind of stain left right at the bottom even after I’ve thoroughly cleaned them. I don’t know why it won’t go. Is there some amazing product I can use other than toilet cleaner to get this off? It’s bugging me as looks like toilet is not clean!

Harpic power plus max toilet cleaner. Think it's £1 in Tesco just now for a 750ml bottle. Really removes limescale on ours (we get similar staining I think it's to do with hard water)

MickHucknallspinkpancakes · 29/12/2018 13:14

For me it's only bleach left overnight that gets the whiteness back.

An old army house tip was a bottle of cheap cola overnight. Never tried it but might be worth a shot?

Fairylea · 29/12/2018 13:17

Bleach everyday overnight. We live in a really hard water area and it’s the only thing that works.

dalmatianmad · 29/12/2018 13:18

I chuck some Bleach down every night before bed.

FiaMarrow · 29/12/2018 13:28

Citric acid works really well, pour it in and leave overnight.

MustBeThin · 29/12/2018 13:28

Another vote for Harpic, I leave it in the toilet over night and wake up to a sparkling loo.

IwillrunIwillfly · 29/12/2018 13:29

I tried the coke trick recently and it worked really well! Pour cheap full sugar cola down and leave overnight. Loosened all the stains by morning then I just use a cheap Tesco own thick bleach every night.

GVmama · 31/12/2018 17:02

These are fantastic, just drop one into the bowl at bedtime and your loo with be clear of any marks the next morning. They're amazing!

It's probably limescale, you need something to remove that otherwise bleach just cleans it for a bit but it's always there and it stains so easily.

PersonaNonGarter · 31/12/2018 17:06

Please think of the environment. Bleach everyday is really bad.

Oblomov18 · 31/12/2018 17:32

Why are you bleaching every night? That is BAD!

Fairylea · 31/12/2018 18:06

So is driving everyday, having children, eating processed foods, eating meat, using plastic etc etc if you think about it all.... I’m sure (mostly) everyone still does those things.

blueshoes · 31/12/2018 18:08

Sometimes, you need a little plastic chisel (improvise) to tackle those really tough limescale deposits. Once you have done that, try to keep scrubbing regularly, not necessary with bleach every time, to avoid limescale build up in the first place.

My cleaner left a bleach bottle next to each toilet and we also have a toilet brush nearby. It is very easy to just do a quick scrub every now and then. My toilets now no longer get crusty.

Oblomov18 · 31/12/2018 18:21

Oh come on Fairylea, even by MN standards, eg washing your towels after a single use Wink, daily bleach is full on!

Oblomov18 · 31/12/2018 18:22

Or is it only me who thinks, goodness I haven't bleached the toilets for ages......Grin

Fairylea · 31/12/2018 18:24

What about bleaching your towels after every use!? Uber mumsnetting Grin

Redred2429 · 01/01/2019 00:59

I had this problem and nothing helped I started using bloo it's a powder and pop some in every morning my toilet looks perfect I recommend it

thisisjustdaft · 01/01/2019 01:15

I second the Harpic limescale treatment. We'd tried for ages to remove similar to what you are describing, and in desperation about a fortnight ago, I emptied a whole bottle of the stuff down there and left it about 3 hours. Then I got the stiffest long-handled brush I could find - turned out to be an old washing-up brush with a plastic scraper on as well (the one I use for cleaning plant pots in the garden, not for doing the dishes!!) and gave the loo the scrubbing of its life. Like a miracle it was.

BoffinMum · 03/01/2019 21:34

I use Harpic White and Shine, and it works really well.

tilder · 03/01/2019 21:38

We have this problem too but can't use bleach (septic tank). Any alternatives?

maggiso · 03/01/2019 22:38

We have a septic tank/ waste management system and I tried citric acid ( teaspoon overnight- for jam making) it seems to have worked well. Anyone know if this is ok environmentally? I would not use citric acid on the sink as it cold harm theplated fittings.

BoffinMum · 04/01/2019 05:45

I’d be tempted to drain the toilet by flushing it and stopping it refilling, and then getting in there with some Ecover cream cleanser and a scouring pad of some kind. Actually, thinking about it, that works below the waterline as well.

CAAKE · 04/01/2019 06:04

Citric acid really really works so amazingly well on so many surfaces but it is truly magic in the loo! It's safe too (it's in many foods) so I would imagine it is ok for septic tanks.

Cauliflowersqueeze · 04/01/2019 06:26

Crikey I bleach them once a week and thought that was sufficient.

IamFrauBlucher · 04/01/2019 12:26

For a sceptic tank try removing the water from the bowl and pouring white vinegar in overnight to descale?
