Can I save my jumper that's shrunk in the wash?

I took my eye off the ball and have shrunk my lovely winter jumper in the wash.

I put it on a delicates cycle but it has come out about two sizes smaller. I've tried to gently pull it a bit whilst wet but now it's dry it's really small. I have just checked the label again (washing instructions said cool wash inside out) and it's made up of mixed fibres..cotton, nylon, lambs wool and a small amount of cashmere.

Is there anything I can do to rescue it or is it ruined?

Apparently soaking it in fabric conditioner and gently stretching it works.

Beebumble2 · 29/12/2018 10:14

Turn it into a cushion cover 😁

Crazyladee · 29/12/2018 10:15

Seeing as jumper boards are £85, I'll give the fabric conditioner idea a try. Fingers crossed!

I gave mine to dd. She’s 7, it fits her perfectly.

Crazyladee · 29/12/2018 10:32

Oh don't say that Bike

Currently in a bucket soaking in fabric conditioner as I type. I have hope.

Steam and stretch?

Fatted · 29/12/2018 18:16

Can you iron it to stretch it out at all?

PickAChew · 29/12/2018 18:37

There's not much you can do to unfelt it, once it's felted. Not without risking ripping it.

Littlesparrowherenow · 30/12/2018 14:58

Crazyladee how did the conditioner work out?
I've done exactly same with my favourite jumper and it's just soaking it now in conditioner!

Crazyladee · 30/12/2018 15:40

It's slightly bigger but not the same as before I washed it!

I might try it again but let it drip dry instead of putting it on a slow spin cycle after it was soaking.

Thanks... Hoping it works out and your jumper stretches some more. Going to leave mine soaking a while longer!

Crazyladee · 30/12/2018 18:16

Let me know how you get on!

Will do!
I'm going to leave my jumper to soak overnight, although reading back I see you've used fabric conditioner... I read somewhere to use hair conditioner so that's what I put mine in...should read posts more carefully! Imagine they will both have similar effect 🤞

Tillylantern · 30/12/2018 20:26

I soaked mine in fabric conditioner and warm water for an hour. Then gently stretched back to the right size. I rilled it up in a towel to get out the excess water u cant wring it spin it or it will stretch. U have to dry it flat. Mine is like new

VforVienetta · 30/12/2018 20:51

I think I saw something about stuffing the sleeves with rolled up towels while it dries too??
Glad the fabric conditioner helped a bit.
Might be worth trying hair conditioner??

Littlesparrowwherenow

How did you get on with your jumper?

I soaked mine again but soaked overnight this time and then gently wrung out and drip dried on a coat hanger hung over the bath. It now seems back to the original shape.

I'm put off wearing it again to go through all that faff! But at least it's been rescued!

Crazyladee, that's great to hear! I've just put my jumper back on this morning! (I've not wanted to try it in case it didn't fit!)

The fit of the body is back to normal and the sleeves have definitely stretched... I can get my arms in now! They are knitted in stripes, lots of colours and were more felted than the plainer body section. I'm hoping that if I soak it again after today's wear and try stretching sleeves wider, it will be back to normal. 🤞 I was very cautious about stretching the sleeves too far and ripping them!

I dried my jumoer flat on airer with a dehumidifier in the room. I think next time I will try stuffing the sleeves with towels too.

So glad our favourite woollens are wearable again!!

jumoer?!! Jumper😂
