People who do TOMM, what do you manage in your daily 15 mins?

Stompythedinosaur · 27/12/2018 22:40

I'm tempted to give it a go, but I'm not convinced that I can fit my daily jobs into anything like 15 mins, I'm wondering what other people fit in?

Right now the jobs I aim to do daily are: pick up toys and crap from living room floor, wash, dry and put away a load of clothes, empty and refill dishwasher, wipe kitchen surfaces, quick wipe of bathroom and do loo, hoover downstairs. So am I doing too much or should I be able to fit it into 15 mins?

Grateful for any hints!

It would take me more than 15 minutes to put a wash on and put away dry clothes!

I don't hoover or put a wash on every day but I do wash up and wipe down sides daily and hoover ever 3 days.

lynnepot · 27/12/2018 23:12

I would say all those tasks you aim for are half an hours worth. Or two 15 minutes bursts. One burst in the morning and one in the evening perhaps? Things like laundry and washing up I find take surprisingly a long time.

Burlea · 27/12/2018 23:14

Sorry I don't know what TOMM means, maybe I'm missing something.

Stompythedinosaur · 27/12/2018 23:17

Thanks, I generally do about half an hour now. I am just curious as to how what I'm currently doing compares to the TOMM stuff. It appeals to me because I feel like I sort of keep the house the same, but the messy bits of the house never get any better.

Sorry, TOMM is the organised mum method. I had hoped there would be some people who had tried it and could tell me what they did.

I have been trying TOMM for 6 weeks and I am finding it exhausting. Like you, I cannot fit my daily tasks in 15 mins. So, I do about 1-1.5 hrs housework per day.
I am going back to work full time in a couple of weeks and this is not sustainable. I may revert back to 2x2hours on Sat and Sunday.
But, in fairness my home has never looked better or cleaner.

Amore22 · 28/12/2018 06:51

It takes me half an hour to 45 mins to:
Wipe down sides in kitchen 5 mins
Hoover high traffic areas- kitchen, hall and lounge. Stick vacuum 5 mins.
Get washing on, dry, told, put away 15 mins probably
Quick wipe of bathrooms 10 mins
Pick up and tidy random crap - rest of time!

I can't keep it up everyday with my job but figure anything is better than nothing and when I do, it is great.

Marychristmastome · 28/12/2018 07:01

We've just started TOMM and I agree 15 minutes is too little in a 4 bedroom house.

Obviously, more than one person doing the tasks makes it more achieveable.

And, our robotic vacuum cleaner is a big help, I'd really recommend getting one.

Haypanky · 28/12/2018 07:17

I can't decide whether to give tomm a proper try or whether it's just crazy town!!!

Bobbiepin · 28/12/2018 07:21

I don't vacuum as part of my 15 mins/level 1 tasks. I take that to mean tidying toys or clothes away. If I vacuum as part of the 40 mins its in that room only, unless I'm really being a future friend.

My 15 mins involves putting a wash on and one thing in the bathroom in the morning then dishwasher, wipe sides (but not full on disinfect) tidy floor areas and washing hung up in the evening. The washing takes me over 15 mins but I don't do it every day.

thomasthecheekyone · 28/12/2018 07:23

I exclude laundry from my 15 minutes. Wipe a bathroom every other day, quickly tidy and make beds is my 15 minutes.

Thoroughly Hoover and mop the whole house on living room and hall days as part of half an hour as those rooms don't take long.

I'm religious about everything having a home though so my house is always fairly tidy, but if it is messy it doesn't take long to sort.

Guiloak · 28/12/2018 08:05

15 minutes is impossible in a large house. Nice idea but 30mins is what I'm aiming for but usually takes 45mins.

TOMM doesn't seem to account for laundry generated by 4 people. Also I have a lot of extra rooms. I'm trying to figure out my own routine. I work 5 days a week I have to do housework at the weekend. Even if I had a clean house there is the uniform and mountains of PE kit needed for Monday morning.

I'm aiming for no housework in the afternoons at the weekend.

cathf · 28/12/2018 08:38

All you are supposed to do in the 15 mins is a very quick hoover of high traffic areas, make beds, quick wipe of bathrooms and a load of laundry.
I do these throughout the day, and but I doubt they take any longer than 15 mins.
Before I go to work, I make the beds and wipe two toilets and two handbasins. When I get in from work, I put a wash on and put yesterday's wash away. I after dinner, I either hang the wash out or put it in the dryer. I then quickly hoover the kitchen/hall/sitting room where it needs it.
I thi k trying to include dishwasher and wiping down sides etc into the 15 mins is missing the point somewhat. Surely you would do that anyway? TOMM is a brilliant system but it is not a miracle. It is about organising your home in the easiest way possible, but but for most people, that does not involve a little extra time to what you are used to Grin

cathf · 28/12/2018 09:05

Having four bedrooms or a large house should have no impact whatsoever on the 15 min tasks other than the number of beds to make (30secs each?)
It does have an impact on the 30 min daily rota, but that's when you will have to adapt it to suit your home.
I can reproduce how I make it work for me I think a four-bedroom home later, but if anyone is interested?

Stompythedinosaur · 28/12/2018 14:23

Cathf yes, I would be grateful for that.

I might have misunderstood TOMM, I thought the 15 mins was meant to be the jobs you do anyway, with the half hour being the more deep clean jobs? If there are jobs you do anyway, like laundry, plus the 15 mins plus the 30mins it is starting to look like a lot of my evening gone! Possibly that is why it works, though, it is just a way to point put that I need to be doing a lot more housework than the half an hour in the evenings plus time at the weekends I do now.

I was worried about this currently doing the clutter buster then going to do boot camp next week before starting properly

But 15mins does not sound long enough at all it can take me that long just to pick up the toys

MaverickSnoopy · 28/12/2018 15:16

The key is to do what suits you but little and often miraculously turns into a clean house.

I currently have a newborn but was doing it pre newborn and with toddler in tow. Toddler slows things down but not impossible. I definitely see how it's feasible. You do need to start with a tidy house though.

My 15 mins is make beds x 4 = 2 mins. Wipe bathroom is 5 mins = 1-2 elements per day (eg sink + mirror or toilet or bath or floor + under toilet etc). Then put a load of washing on = 3 mins. Then hoover high traffic areas downstairs = 5 mins. The concept is that if you do your big hoover on a Monday, that a very quick hoover 4 times a week is fine and even if it's just the briefest of hoovers it still works because each day you're hoovering in some capacity. I don't do a full bathroom wipe and hoover each day, or I'd never get it done in 15 mins, but little and often really works. Washing gets put away at the end of the day when DH gets home and doesn't fit into the TOMM - I have 5 people to wash for, it would never fit in for me.

The 30 mins is a bit of a stretch the first time but easier in subsequent weeks, because of the concept little and often. Perfect example, Thursday is kitchen day and it suggests you clean the cutlery drawer. I usually exclude that became I know I wouldn't have the time. However DH gave it a big clean today and cleared it out, took him 15 mins. If I'd done that during the first ever Thursday TOMM I never would have done it in the 30 mins, but now that it's been done once I reckon it'll take me a minute to clean.

Ultimately you need to adapt it to suit your needs. If it doesn't work for you then use the little and often concept but for the things that are important for you. Anything has to be better than spending the whole weekend cleaning!!

Crimson72 · 28/12/2018 15:23

Yes please, Cath!

BroomstickOfLove · 28/12/2018 15:33

Today I put on a load of laundry; wiped down the condensation on the windows and opened them to air the rooms; made the bed; cleaned the loos, sinks, and floors of the bathroom and cloakroom; wiped down the inside of the bath, and swept the kitchen floor.

I don't ever get everything one list done in one 15 minute session. I think the joy of the method is that consistently spending a relatively short time each day doing something means that that over time everything is cleaned regularly enough without having to spend ages getting everything done, exhausting yourself and giving up.

mrsjackrussell · 28/12/2018 15:37

I don't include laundry. Just a quick hoover and any time left over spend in bathrooms. It's working out OK as I just hoover the main areas. All the rooms get a good hoover with level 2 jobs anyway

cathf · 28/12/2018 16:56

OK, I'll as promised, my regime:
EVERY DAY: Two toilets wiped and bleached, and handbasins wiped. Very quick hoover around the table and hall if it needs it, beds made, one load of washing done and yesterday's put away.
In addition:
Monday: Sitting room cleaned, and inc floor hoovered and mopped. I mentally split the room in two and alternate sides on alternative weeks, so both sofas are not wiped and hoovered every week.
Tuesday: Bedrooms, but not bedding. All floors hoovered and mopped (Inc bathroom). 60 All upstairs mirrors cleaned. Towels changed and bins upstairs emptied.
Wednesday: Hall and stairs. Bath gets a good clean. Hall, landing and stairs hoovered and mopped, Inc downstairs loo. Glass doors and mirrors downstairs cleaned.
Thursday: Kitchen, but not floor.
Friday: Focus, and as per the routine
Saturday: Utility room, bedding changed
Sunday: kitchen and utility room floors cleaned.

Glad to see this, have been becoming quite anxious about house cleaning. Going back to work 2 days per week but these are shifts from 7.45am to 8.30pm not going to worry about much these days. Willl just Have to count these as the weekend days.?

sherrysfortea · 28/12/2018 18:21

TOMM doesn't work for me

Instead I make sure I do daily tasks of:

Hoovering either upstairs, downstairs or the stair carpet
Put a wash on and put dry clothes away (I Iron as and when I need to)

Then I do one additional task; dusting a room, blitzing bathroom with flash, clean out fridge etc

Once a week hoover all floors at once, mop floors and dust/polish whole house

I wipe down kitchen, do washing up and clean sink every day

ICJump · 28/12/2018 20:10

After watching several TOMM videos it’s peetty clear that Gemma dies more that 45 minutes cleaning a day. Once I understand stood that I felt much calmer.

I’ve, up until Christmas, fine the 15 minutes level almost every day. It helps that I’ve got a hand held vacuum cleaner. Also I just vacuum what I can get to. I do put the washing on but as I only have a outdoor line I can’t count it in 15 minutes. As it take about 10 to put it in the line.

I’m thinking of trying a bowl full of lemons but I’m due in 5 weeks do it could just be the insane nesting instinct www.abowlfulloflemons.net/blog

Skinfulnappies46 · 28/12/2018 21:06

To be honest, I don’t mind doing 45 mins a day..doesn’t have to be done all at once and although I haven’t started yet, I can see that just knowing that I can tackle it all to an acceptable standard helps my anxieties a lot.
