Best water for steam ironing?

wallpeppering · 19/12/2018 09:21

We live in London, and have a tendency to kill steam irons... Just bought a Morphy Richards Jet Steam iron and hope it can survive a bit longer.

The manual recommends distilled or demineralised water and I have seen online advice that steam iron water should be mixed 50% with tap water.

What is your choice of ironing water? Do you buy it online? Do you have a filter jug for it? Please advice, I don't want another innocent iron to die a wet, scaly death!

The water from the (condenser) tumble dryer drawer, most of the time. Occasionally some nice stuff from waitrose.

(The tumble-dryer-produced water being distilled and plentiful)

We used to buy de-ionised water from amazon quite cheaply.

Just use tap water now and haven't had any problems.

Used to be in London. We bought 5 L bottles of water from B&Q. It would last months.

See I've always wanted to do this, all that lovely clean (not to drink of course) water seems a shame to pour back down the sink, but my steam generator specifically states not to use this kind of water, but don't know why.

All told, it doesn't matter where I live - extremely soft water area, but would make sense to use it.

Most manuals I've read op said 50-50, I'd heard completely distilled water is just as bad (could be bullshit and again don't know why if so)

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! No tumble dryer here, just hard London water from the tap. I have been using plain tap water and eventually all my irons spit limescale...I will have a look at B&Q and mix it 50-50.

Have a great, iron-free, holiday Xmas Smile

Have a great, iron-free, holiday I think you'd prefer an ion-free holiday.

anniehm · 19/12/2018 16:05

I buy ironing water from Aldi or other supermarkets - 60p approx, iron is 15 old and showing no signs of limescale

wallpeppering · 19/12/2018 18:54

haha Ifailed ion-free holiday sounds much more sensible!

I wanted to try using the tumble dryer water in the iron, but when put it in the jug saw lots of bits of fluff in the water, that put me off and I use filtered water instead. It still makes the limescale appear, albeit slower. Sad

Search Amazon for 'water distiller'...many to choose from.

I use the water in my iron, for my fragrance oil burner and to make magnesium oil for topical application.

I preboil water and leave it in a jug, is that not the same as distilled water? I hate it with a passion when my steam iron randomly spits out a filthy squirt of black limescale onto an absolutely inevitably white garment.

hedgehoglurker · 22/12/2018 10:56

(To PP - Boiled water isn't distilled - distilled is steam, which has been condensed back to liquid water.) I use Brita filtered water, which certainly reduces the scale, but doesn't eradicate.

Old thread but I have worked out how to do it. 1. Collect rainwater in a clean container with a large surface area, I use a plastic storage container. 2. Transfer water to large saucepan, leaving the bits that sink in the collection container. 3. Bring to the boil and allow to cool. 4. Pass through an old Brita filter cartridge into the Brita jug. 5. Store filtered water in labelled clean milk container.

This just popped back up on my threads. Five years on I have cracked it. I bought a fancy new iron and now only use distilled water. It’s available in Asda for £1.50 for a big tub. Look for battery water rather than ironing water as it’s cheaper. No black filth on my ironing any more!
