Help me to clean up after a house fire

Our house had a small fire yesterday. All ok, some fire damage in kitchen but mostly smoke damage. How in the heck do I get rid of the acrid smell of burnt wood that's everywhere?
We're sugar soaping the soot off the walls and tried removing the burnt fixtures but that smell is still bad despite windows and doors being left open. I can taste it, it's in my nose and cleaning it is giving me a stuffy head.
Any tips or experience that can help us please?

Wow that's scary. Glad you are all safe. Sugar soap the surfaces is the right way. Plus hot washing curtains, sofa covers, etc. Steam cleaner on carpets too. Can you hire a steam cleaner on the insurance?

Sorry this has happened. I've been in a pretty bad house fire. The smell is very hard to get rid of.

If you can't completely clean an object (Hot soapy water, or in washing machine) you might have to chuck it.

Re walls etc yes keep washing them. Can your insurance company give specialist advice and support? Carpets, curtains etc will probably have to be replaced. The water used to put out the fire also very smelly and invasive.

I think you would be best contacting insurance company for a specialist company. You should also get all electrical items and wiring checked by an electrician before using them. Sorry this happened to you it’s astounding how even a small fire can damage your home

You need to be really careful cleaning this yourself a lot of the stuff is really toxic. Have you not contacted your insurance provider?

Thanks for advice, yes it is pretty acrid! Being careful to get regular fresh air (all windows wide open and extractor fans on).
Insurance gave us similar advice-no cleaning on insurance policy. All electrics checked too, no damage to appliances thankfully.
Still sugar-soaping, had to throw a lot of stuff out-what a horrid mess!
Tomorrow, I'm cleaning carpets-smoke damaged. Luckily, they didnt need to use water to put fire out, so slightly less mess.
I dont think the smell will go until workmen clear the burnt fittings, in the new year.

Saw the news today of the family who died in house fire-their 5 year old died today. Hugged DC tighter tonight.
