How should I cover this window/door in kitchen?

We have a back door in the kitchen with a window adjoining it - see photo.

Our heating is rubbish and there is one tiny radiator in the kitchen which is barely warm.
The room is freezing and I’m not enjoying looking at the dark outside.

But what would be the best solution? I’ thinking it could only be curtains (dh not keen) as if there was a blind at the window it would finish in the middle which would look weird.

Any sugggestions appreciated please. Am also posting in home decoration as am desperate (& very cold).

Given the depth of the recess, the only solution I can see is curtains. You could put a roman blind at the window but not at the door. You could put a roller blind at the window but not all the way down the door. You'd have to have the curtain pole on the outside of the recess, so you couldn't combine a blind at the window with a curtain over the door.

Sorry, it's curtains for you :D

I'll get my coat.

That looks lovely!

I don't get why you can't have blinds? Just have them over the window, I don't think that would look weird. Leave the door window bare.

To keep the cold out a thick interlined curtain would be the best IMO, certainly over the door anyway. I have an interlined curtain that also has a thermal lining, you notice the difference. I also have a draught excluder/sausage for the bottom of the door. I’m not a fan of sil length curtains so I’d probably move the table away from the wall a little and have a full length pair. You could put a thinner pair up in summer...

Move the table slightly, then a lovely thick pair of curtains that cover both window and door providing there is enough space to the right of the door to fully open them?

Agree with curtains, can the table move back? I'd do a track (It loses less space and keeps drafts out) with full length curtains. I Id add a coordinating roller blind as you may find sometimes you just want to block the window and not the door. But a blind by itself won't significantly warm things up. Then as a pp said; you can swap to lighter curtains in summer.

If the door gets used make sure to can pull the curtains all the way back past the opening or it'll be really annoying/pull the track down when it snags (the voice of experience)

Does your radiator need bleeding

Has your boiler got a dial for the radiator side of things...we've just noticed ours does and turning that up has made a big difference to the temp of the radiators!

Other than that, either curtains on a pole on the outside of the recess and pull table forward or a tension rod inside and pull curtains to the window side to get in and out

Tension rod benefit is they are a small diameter if the space above the door is tight, the curtains sit closer the the window/door and it's easy to fit then easily removed when the weather improves I love tension rods!

I think covering the whole area will make it more visually pleasing rather than just having a blind at the window
