I'm putting it here in case it is mistaken for the Toilet Troll.

Should a towel ring be fitted for each member of the household, or a rack of clean towels, that are put in the laundry bin after use?

What size towels should be provided?

What about visitors:

  • staying for a weekend or longer
  • not staying overnight

Not speaking from experience here, but I think I would go for cloths rather than towels. Years ago, I bought some large squares - bigger than a face flannel but smaller than a hand towel - from La Redoute. They were for the downstairs loo when we had a large household and a lot of visiting children. I used to put them in the wash (the cloths, not the children) every time I washed my hands in there. They were small enough to wash and dry quickly but big enough. I've just replaced them with 'guest towels' which are a bit bigger but still small compared to hand towels.

Anyways, I used to put these cloths/tiny towels in a basket and there was a bin under the sink for used ones. I think I'd rather that than family ones hanging up.

Bidet towels?! We just use two sheets of loo roll.

In Italy each family member has their own, and they hang on a low rack by the bidet. Overnight guests will have a suitable small towel left on their bed, along with any other towels offered.
Daytime visitors manage with loo roll, although very fancy houses offer a visible stack of fresh towels and a basket to leave them in.

Bidet towels are smaller than hand towels, but larger than flannels.

Here in the UK we mostly manage with dabbing loo roll as I feel the risk of people drying their hands on a bidet towel is high, although we do sometimes use them and put them straight in the wash.

I HAVE GIVEN ADVICE TO PIGLET JOHN! MY LIFE IS COMPLETE.

I don’t think guest will use a bidet - unless they have their own, they won’t know what to do with it.

A rack of clean towels in safer than individual ones. I agree with messysurfaces that there is risk people will use them for other things!

If you have guests, please explain the protocol to them or they may be lost!

The more pressing question here is how have you managed to find a bidet in the UK? I haven’t seen one there in the five years I’ve lived there,

PigletJohn · 11/12/2018 11:55

All plumbers merchants can order them, if they aren't stocked.

QS do a range of Twyfords sanitaryware at a good price.

Bidet mixer taps are strangely more expensive than basin mixers, but the fittings for taps and plug are the same as basin.

In plumbing terms, a bidet is just a washbasin that happens to be fitted low. The fountain type does not correspond to UK regulations, which are strict on any possibility of back-syphonage into the waterpipes.

I do have an Italian friend.

p.s.

Where else would you bath the baby, or dolls, or wash your feet and socks?

In the bath or shower like the rest of the country Grin

I actually have a friend who has just had a bidet fitted, much to the amusement of the plumbers he said they hadn’t fitted one for 25 years. The apprentice didn’t know what it was - I told him he needs to go abroad more!

Ilovedotcotton · 11/12/2018 12:21

I’m now going to text and ask my friend what kind of towels they use in the bathroom.

Cecilia2016 · 11/12/2018 14:14

thanks for asking this question we had ours fitted early this year not my choice but husband and didn’t know the towels to use and we haven’t used it yet? We had ours done by B&Q

Ilovedotcotton · 11/12/2018 14:40

I’ve just asked my friend and he said, ‘do we need towels, I just thought people just used loo roll’ Grin

I would put money on the fact that he is now looking online for bidet towels!
