Baby Poo Stains - help please!

Hello, my DD has just turned 4 weeks old. Could I have your tried and tested methods for preventing baby poo from staining baby clothes please? Also what didyou do if it was a big poo explosion in the middle of the night (would you have to go and put the washing machine on, etc?)

I have tried a few things but it is not working. I'd like to crack it because she's moving up to the next size and I really want to keep her clothes nice if I can! Thanks Smile

@Emelene if there is only a small stain, then I absolutely recommend Mr Muscle Shout stain remover. You can get it from Home Bargains and it is my go to for spots and stains that I want to remove! I am forever stocked up. As for the poo explosion... If there is a massive explosion and you don't want to throw it away, then I would quickly rinse off the poo as soon as possible, fill a bucket of cold water (never hot water because it can set the stain and make it easier to remove), get your stain remover powder (doesn't matter which. They all contain the same ingredients and has the same principle), add a couple of large scoops to it and then place is inside. I would then leave it overnight if you can! Then put in the wash on a 60c at least to kill any bacteria and germs on there and ideally use biological washing powder. That is what I've always done and it has removed 95% of the stains, and the rest slowly removes whenever it goes into the washing machine. HTH!

This is what we do. We've lost very few things (doing less well now with food stains!):

Wash poo off under cold tap.

Leave clothes damp in washing basket (we have a separate one for baby stuff. If very bad or very wet, tie up in a nappy bag).

Wash at 40 with fairy non bio and napisan.

The napisan definitely makes her clothes fade faster, so we only put it in when necessary.

Unless your baby has v delicate/sensitive skin, start using BIO washing powder/liquid. Non bio is crap, I will never understand the obsession for using non bio for no reason. Also use a scoop of Vanish powder in the wash.

Vanish Gold is great for spot treatment, with the rubbing head. Soak as soon as the stain happens, but you can leave a wash until the morning.

I find most stains are easily treated with fairy liquid if done quickly after the accident.

If my DC had a leaky poo in the night I rinse the clothes under the tap, squirt the washing up liquid over the stain and let it sit overnight, comes out in the wash.

Soak soiled items overnight in a solution of powdered biological washing powder and warm water. Wash as normal when you are ready. Formil from Lidl is excellent. No need for any expensive products at all.

Sunlight/daylight is brilliant for getting rid of stains as well. Hang them out on the line or in front of a window while still wet from the wash, works a treat.

MynameisJune · 09/12/2018 08:06

Sunlight will fade baby poo stains. Bit difficult this time of year but even on a windowsill it will work.

Violets mineral bleach is kinder on clothes than napisan although more expensive.

CatsCatsCats11 · 09/12/2018 08:08

Honestly I always found baby pop (especially so young) just washes out without anything. If there's a stain leave it in direct sunlight and it will be gone.

We use cloth nappies and have never had a poo explosion because they contain everything better, however the nappies themselves do stain at times. We do a cold rinse (no detergent) before a long wash (with a full dose of non bio powder) and this usually gets them out. Rarely they need hanging outside in the sun for a bit (any daylight seems to work, it doesn’t have to be really sunny). If I don’t get a chance to hang them outside and they are still stained it tends to come out in the next wash anyway. We wash our nappies every other day with no problems with stains setting in or anything so I really wouldn’t worry about doing a wash in the middle of the night. EBF poo is water solvable and largely inoffensive.

I always used Pampers Premium and never had a poo explosion either. It's nothing to do with cloth or disposable.

KonaMum · 09/12/2018 11:37

@Shmithecat Generally speaking cloth does contain better in my experience and a lot of cloth mums who have switched from disposables say the same. They tend to be more adjustable so you can get a better fit.

Thank you for all your suggestions so far. Smile

Another vote for sunlight

Mossyhill · 09/12/2018 20:15

I soak immediately in an old clean bowl with soda crystals then chuck in the wash with a pile of similar colours when I’m doing a load. Comes out perfectly.

ButterflyWitch · 09/12/2018 20:15

I'm a slattern and baby no 2 was a pooper. I found washing in biological powder and drying outside in sunlight got rid of most stains. If you can't hang outside just put in a windowsill and that should work (but takes longer)

spugzbunny · 09/12/2018 20:27

Soaking and sunlight! Any poo (or any stained clothes) get rinsed and put in a bucket of cold water and wading powder with a bit of vanish (or astonish?) powder. Wash as normal with the next load and then if the stain is still hanging around then it's out in the sun - even on a cloudy or rainy day!

SurvivingCBeebies · 09/12/2018 20:29

Fairy stain remover straight on ASAP with a bit of water and a scoop in the wash... x
