New pillows - do you wash them before use?

I bought goose down pillows which are advised as washable. They are larger (fluffier?) than expected and I think they'll struggle to fit in my washing machine. I am just wondering if I should take them to a local laundry place where massive drums are available, or just leave them unwashed....

I usually wash new items before use. But is it necessary?

We don't have carpets but have rugs which are washed once a while. We don't wear shoes at home though, so our floor won't get dirty so soon. Our sofas are leather so they will get wiped, and I have anti-bac sprays for other furniture....

But our car is in such a mess.

You are actually suppose to wash new clothing and bedding before use, to remove loose dyes and the fabric treatment chemicals (that are applied to make them look nice in the store, to repel creases and Ward off fabric pests) as they can cause skin irritation. Not to mention if someone else has tried them on in the changing room etc.

Tbh I never do, as mentioned upthread, new clothes are never exactly the same after washing.

To make you more phobic - I read somewhere new clothes are actually filthy, they've been handled a million times in making, shipping, storing and then in the shop by staff and customers,. Plus some clothes are stored in warehouses for months before reaching the store and apparently these aren't the most cleanest of places.

New pillows though - would never occur to me to wash them before use. I have pilllows that keep their shape very well after washing, but I still panick every time I need to wash them as they cost a fortune, and always worried that one time they won't.

Nope...i have enough in my life to worry about than unseen 'germs' on new clothing or pillows....how utterly ridiculous !!

FrogFairy · 07/12/2018 17:54

I wash new clothes, bedding and towels but not duvets or pillows.

However, when I bought latex pillows they need a good airing as they had a strong chemical smell.

Year, germs and chemical are my reason of washing new items.

A tiny thing for someone doesn't need to be equally a tiny matter for others. You can say that you wouldn't do it yourself but saying it 'ridiculous' is rather narrow minded... Also, phobia is hard to overcome.

I would wash a new pillowcase, but not a new pillow. Frankly, I don't like pillows post washing, and usually replace them shortly after they have needed a washing. They go lumpy!

Would your new pillow in a washed protector and case provide enough barriers for you to feel comfortable?

Cecilia2016 · 07/12/2018 21:33

I do wash new clothes before use and beddings as well but not the pillows

happylilac · 08/12/2018 00:09

It sounds like washing pillows before use is minority...

So I followed some suggestion here and opted for airing then put a washed clean pillow case. It may sound strange but I sometimes challenge myself like this - deliberately avoid ultra-cleanness and tell myself to let my obsession go.

Washing pillows makes them go lumpy and clumpy.
They are never the same after being washed - that is the actual reason for buying a new pillow, IME.
You are putting the pillow inside a pillowcase.

Oh, and no, I don't wash new clothes before wearing them either.

Perfectly1mperfect · 08/12/2018 00:42

I wash clothing, duvet covers and sheets before use but I wouldn't think to wash pillows.

nicoala1 · 08/12/2018 00:43

What drugs are you all taking, may I have some please? LOL.

Washing before wearing or sleeping on. Honestly, no wonder our planet is doomed. Less is more.
