DS2 is potty training and is doing really well. The problem is he likes to empty it himself and I admit I have let him do this because it has encouraged him to use the potty. Occasionally he spills a few drops and on a couple of othe occasions DD (17 mths) has tipped the whole thing out.
I have tried dettol also shake n vac (not together) but I keep getting a whiff and its bothering me.

can anyone suggest a product thet works. Yours hopefully BKBK

Hi BKBK. This may or not be of help - and bear with me, as it will sound a bit random to start with! When you have a cat that sprays / wees indoors, one of the things that the animal behaviourists tell you to do is to try to eliminate the smell of urine so that the cat isn't drawn back to the same spot repeatedly. They always used to recommend using a solution of biological washing powder (or I'm sure liquid would be fine!) which is supposed to break down the ammonia and protein compunds in the wee. They then said that once that had dried, you should use surgical spirit (IIRC, it's a few years since I was involved in this sort of stuff!). The surgical spirit is used to remove any lipid compounds that may be there. I have no idea if this works, having never had the peeing cat problem myself, nor do I know what it is that leaves the telltale smell, but I suppose it's worth a go. And bless your ds2 with his helpful(?!) potty emptying. I have only a ds at the mo and we haven't reached the heady heights of potty training yet

Is it a pile carpet? If it's of the rug variety (i.e. flatter, not furry), well we just washed it in the bath with usual washing powder. Ours was less than 2 years old too and had the same problem (DD weeing on it) and I just bit the bullet because I couldn't afford the dry cleaning costs. It looks fine, hasn't been ruined (a Laura Ashley cotton & silk thing). There was a big tea or coffee stain too and that hasn't come out, but it was months old so I'm not surprised.

Its a pile carpet, so cant wash in machine but I am going to try biological wash powder on it, it cant harm can it. Oh the joys of motherhood

Used this to get rid of cat wee smells and it worked a treat- they do a human one too

alison222 · 20/06/2007 22:14

I got stuff from the pet shop to get the smell f vomit off the car seats - it says it works on pet urine etc so why not human too?

Bi-carbonate of soda. I think. xx

My sister swears that if you pour tonic water on wee stains it gets rid of the smell (has to be full fat, can't be slimline though).

I only have the cat urine variety problem but Aggie suggested (and I follow) the bi-carbonate of soda method. That is to put on the carpet dry and really rub in well. Leave for an absolute age before vacuuming up to make sure it absorbs everything. In our experience this takes out smell but not stain. We use white spirit on painted surfaces.
