Removing plastic labels from glass jars

Last year I really got into jam making, so now I'm always on the lookout for nice jars. But more and more of them have a kind of plastic label sealed or laminated onto the jar and the old method of soaking the jar and scraping the label off with a knife just has no effect. Anybody found a way to get these labels off?

I use peanut butter or mayonnaise. Spread it on the label and leave it for half an hour, should come off easy!

I have to ask - how did you discover that, Mama?

MamaSparkles · 16/11/2018 19:47

I found the tip online when I was trying to get stickers off a wardrobe door! It's worked perfectly every time I've tried it.

WD40 works a treat getting the sticky residue off too

Sometimes filling the jar with very hot water - keeping the outside dry - will melt the adhesive so the labels peel off easily.

Grin I now have a visual of a wardrobe door smeared with mayonnaise.

or do you mean plastic sleeves?
they are easy enough to remove

MamaSparkles · 16/11/2018 20:18

That's what is was like Katherina 😁 just last week I had a new chopping board covered in mayo to get the sticker off!

I just use Flora oil or any cheap oil. Rub the label with a scourer and then rub some oil on it. It gets anything off!

Another WD40 or oil recommendation here. You need to break down the adhesive. Then wipe off the oil with vodka

Hairdryer or over the gas ring - heat basically, to soften the glue

What an amazing range of solutions! Thank you!
