Heated clothes airers?

I'm thinking of getting one of these for my student son to use as he doesn't have a tumble dryer in his shared house. I saw one in Lakeland today and it looked like it could do the job for him.
Does anyone have one and does it work?
If so, can anyone recommend one that's less than the £100 one in Lakeland?
Thank you

I have the Lakeland one, infact second hand it is fantastic

Paddybare · 01/11/2018 19:25

Yes we have that one, highly recommended.

AlleyG · 01/11/2018 19:26

People on here absolutely love them but I just don't get it. I bought one a couple of years ago and I was so disappointed after reading all the hype on here.

I bought one a couple of years ago and it was shit.
It took up loads of room (which will be an issue if your son has one room in a shared house) and looked like an eyesore.
It didn't dry washing particularly quickly.
The large ones don't really hold a full load (they say they do but they don't.
It created loads of condensation in my spare room (even with the sheet over it)
It was no different from just putting washing over radiators.

Don't bother.

I returned mine after a month or so.

Creepyexgirlfriend · 01/11/2018 19:28

I have that one and it's great. It's quite big though so depends how much space he has. Also, Stuff can take quite a while to dry.

MissMarplesKnitting · 01/11/2018 19:29

Got the big one. It's great.

That said i have got a space out the waybill can put it, with windows on locked vent.

Two 7kg loads dry overnight. You have to learn to load it effectively but I love mine.

tigerlionness · 01/11/2018 19:30

Agree with AlleyG, overrated!

WooYa · 01/11/2018 19:32

I've got the Argos one for £40 and use a fitted sheet to cover it instead of a cover.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 01/11/2018 19:34

Not sure if it's an option but DS's Uni house share didn't have one and they bought one together-
DS up north and the thought of going through the winter drying duvets and towels etc was motivation.
Also-be careful not to dry too many clothes near where they sleep as the damp can exacerbate asthma etc

CupoBlood · 01/11/2018 19:37

I had a dribuddy years ago, it's basically a hair dryer under the cover 😂

mumto2babyboys · 01/11/2018 19:37

I had the Lakeland one and I had to return it. Even overnight work shirts would be damp in places and jumpers/towels lol no chance

Was ok for baby clothes. Bit of a pain to load it as well then leave stuff on that hadn't dried. And it is massive

I've actually got two tumble dryers. One I had for years that takes ages to dry which is why I bought the air dryer

and a new one that is great

but if I have loads to wash. As I always do I just put them both on, pretty sure the old one will break soon anyway.

Lakeland will let you return it though so might be worth trying it for a week and see if it's for you but for the same price almost, you could get a tumble dryer.

Flamingdinosaur · 01/11/2018 19:37

We have the Lakeland one. We live in a small flat with no outside drying space so it's essential for us. However, it does get in the way.

mumto2babyboys · 01/11/2018 19:38

You can get compact tumble dryers too in Argos. White knight I think, that he could keep in his room with a condenser box

and they are so quiet to run the newer ones

BedraggledBlitz · 01/11/2018 19:50

I use mine every day and it's definitely better than relying on radiators. I don't have room for a tumble dryer.

But I have a utility room where it can live, it's big so could get in way.

Also takes a while to dry stuff - think very thin towel radiator.

But as others have said Lakeland are great for returning products so why not try It?

India1819 · 01/11/2018 19:51

I love ours. Although it was only £30 from Aldi but I would pay more if I needed to it’s a god send in winter. The trick is to use a fitted sheet to tent it over.

This is the half sized tumble dryer I was thinking off. Along with a condenser box. Should fit in his room

AlleyG · 01/11/2018 20:50

Is there not a laundrette nearby that he can use? Perhaps him and his housemates could club together for a taxi there/back once a week or whatever

sluj · 02/11/2018 08:26

Thank you for you replies. Unfortunately there is no space for a tumble dryer and so they only have an outdoor line and an indoor airer between the 4 of them. I can't see them carting bag loads of wet washing across the town every week to a launderette, they can't all use the washing machine at the same time so would have to go separately.
I was looking at these because they look like they might speed the drying process up . I wasn't expecting dry clothes within a couple of hours so potentially a heated aired might do the job for them.
Has anyone got one from the Amazon collection?

mumto2babyboys · 02/11/2018 14:28

Have you checked the sizing. The airer is huge and needs to be next to a socket. The mini tumble dryer can fit on top on a worktop similar to a tabletop fridge

hmmwhatatodo · 04/11/2018 10:33

I have wanted the Lakeland aired for a few years now and was close to buying it until I saw a broken one propped up outside someone’s house and I saw how bulky it was when folded. There’s no way I could store it in my small living space when closed and it would take up far too much space open so now I’m debating a dehumidifier....

owlonabike · 04/11/2018 17:05

If he doesn’t mind ironing or doesn’t care about creases, would it be worth buying a spin dryer? Would make a difference to drying times for bedding and towels in particular.
