Using an indoor fireplace- wheres the damper?!

After moving into a house with a working fireplace (was cleaned by the previous owners using a proper chimney sweep a few months ago)- how do we use it?!

Online wikis say to find the damper. Where on earth is this?! I poked my head up but can't see much in the way of a chain or lever. The tip of the fireplace itself is hinged- could this be the damper adjuster?! I'm very confused! Photo of the top of fireplace- it's completely hinged and moves in and out about an inch. Second photo of the inside looking up. Any help appreciated!

Does anything move in the chimney when you move the top of the fireplace?

GiantKitten · 30/10/2018 14:59

Is a damper a thing st the bottom you move to increase draught?

Ours hasn’t got one as far as I know but it works.

This is ours. Scruffy mismatched mess Grin pic up flue no good as full of soot Blush

There’s nothing to adjust on ours. Damper might be a stove thing?

Ok, I’ve googled and I’m none the wiser but there are YouTube videos on how to open your damper!

There's no damper on an open fire. A clised wood oven has a damper but an old fashioned fireplace doesn't - the air circulates naturally as it's open.

ClOSed not clised

Going by this it’s not a standard UK thing.

If there isn’t an obvious handle/lever, I don’t think you’ve got one.

Some open fires draw a draft from under the floor up through the fire so there is a small lever or similar at the bottom of the fire so you can adjust this. Adjusting the chimney would justnsent the smoke into the room! Some open fires don’t have a damper.

We had a damper on the fire when I was little. You pulled it out to redirect the heat up the back of the fire to heat the water in the boiler. So used a poker with a bent end to pull it out, it was up the chimney slightly at the back.
I think some old fireplaces had a draught from underneath which was damper controlled.
Just open the vent on the front of the grate cover, that should do.
Blow a hairdryer up the chimney to remove blockages of cold air if it hasn't been used in a while so the smoke doesn't come into the room. Once chimney is warmed it should draw fine.

Its like a lid at the top where the smoke goes up,

Is that the same as a spot flap then?
We have a spot flap on the top of ours which we never close cause I always forget but if it has been closed and we open it and light a fire too quickly, all the smoke comes into the room because the chimney isn’t drawing yet- it needs warm air up the chimney to suck the smoke out of the room. Or you’ll suffocate 😱
