What are these marks on my toilet?

Only on this toilet, not the others. We have a domestic water softener, and I'm allergic to fragrances so I only use plain bleach and a scrubbing brush.

We've had the softener for years, and have no limescale anywhere in the house as a result. So it can't be limescale.

Is it salt from the softener? Why only here?

How can I shift it? Preferably without making myself ill.

I think it’s from the bleach being out on and then left a while before rinsing.

The white lines are from the bleach. Use a loo brush to distribute it more evenly.
The stains are limescales. You'd be better off using limescale remover.

GreenTulips · 28/10/2018 13:43

I'd say something has been down the toilet causing other things to stick

So yes to 100% limescale remover overnight for a few nights (saves scrubbing but you can of you want to)

gamerchick · 28/10/2018 13:46

Why are you using bleach? Bleach doesn't clean and it's showing up the limescale.

Get a proper limescale remover.

JellySlice · 28/10/2018 14:08

I'll have a go with acid, but I'm not convinced it is limescale. The softener has been operating for long enough that it has dissolved away all residual limescale from before its installation, and no more limescale is being deposited. I don't have any limescale anywhere else in the house, other than in the kettle.

Why would bleach be leaving lines? It's just straightforward thin bleach, not the thick stuff that sticks to the sides because I'm allergic to it.

Bleach can take the shine off and make the surface more porous and likely to stain.
I didn't realise this until we had bathroom done 4 yrs ago, I read the info that came with the new toilet and it said not to use bleach.
So we didn't and really notice the difference, it seems to resist staining compared to the 2 other toilets in the house.

Cynderella · 28/10/2018 15:07

Bleach is best saved for occasional use when hot soapy water won't clean and even then, I'd try soda crystals or vinegar first.

gamerchick · 28/10/2018 15:39

Bleach is only good for illness in the house. Its supposed to be used sparingly.

GreenTulips · 28/10/2018 15:43

We had a toilet that the builders stuck stuff down it - it made every thing stick

The only thing that worked was lime scale remover and we didn't live in a limescale area

Bleach should be used occasionally in drains - it's awful stuff

JellySlice · 28/10/2018 16:19

I don't use bleach regularly. Every couple of months, maybe. The loos are regularly scrubbed with the loo brush - that does get bleached more often. I pour soapy water down the loos when I've finished, say, handwashing something, and use it as an opportunity to give the loo a wipe down and scrub at the same time.

I am a very slack housekeeper!
