New Dyson - cordless or not?

My very old vacuum has finally conked out so I'm looking to buy a replacement. I'll be getting a Dyson as I was very happy with my old one, which lasted about 20 years.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the cordless Dysons and do you prefer them to corded? I'm considering going cordless but am worried about battery life and whether it could be a PITA to charge.

Well I saw an ad with James Dyson the other day where he said the cordless ones are now do good they have stopped making the corded style! So I would go cordless as there will be no aftersales support for corded soon.

Cordless changed my life! Have never run out of battery - have the v8, four bed bungalow with a dog, I find it’s much easier to just whip it out to do spots ie if someone/dog drags in mud, so therefore not expending so much time on deep clean, much better for back as more upright

I have the new v10. I love it but only for zooming around the kitchen or sitting room. On full power (which gives best suction, lower power is just ok imo) you only get about 10 mins of use. I use my miele if I'm hoovering the whole house.

Like I say I only use the dyson for quick blasts. I have a toddler and 2 other children so tend to do the kitchen floor at least 5 times a day! I wouldn't be giving up my main vacuum cleaner for one though.

I've just returned a Dyson v8 for a refund as it kept cutting out two weeks after buying it...but i wasn't particularly happy with it anyway. You have to keep your finger on the trigger and the design of the handle made it quite uncomfortable to operate for any stretch of time. It was perfect for whipping round after breakfast etc, but expensive for only that. My quest for a new vacuum continues Smile

We’ve got the V8 and it is great for us, it will do the whole house in normal mode and one floor in it’s maximum mode. It just hangs up in the cupboard charging and it is so easy I actually use it! However, the hard floors are fine in normal mode but the carpets really need the max power. We have bought a Henry for our cleaner because she needs to be able to do a good job of the whole house in one go and I actually think the cream bedroom carpets look noticeably better than after I’ve done them with the Dyson.

I love my cordless dyson. Don’t even get the corded one out anymore.

Toothfairee · 26/10/2018 12:42

do you have to unplug it after 3.5 hours or can you just leave it on the charger for days? (just bought the v10)

Tinkhasflown · 26/10/2018 15:45

@Toothfairee you can just leave it on the charger.

iamme21 · 26/10/2018 15:47

Buy a shark, so much better than dyson

Toothfairee · 26/10/2018 16:14

thanks @Tinkhasflown

Rafflesway · 26/10/2018 16:46

Definitely agree iamme21!

Took delivery of my brand new Shark cordless duo clean liftaway this morning and have since vacuumed the whole house. FABULOUS!!

Ceilingrose · 26/10/2018 23:23

The V20 is great. I also own a Henry.

It's true it doesn't last long on full power, but mostly it isn't needed. Normal power cleans normal mess-even with teenagers. It's great to just pick it up as and when, as it's lightweight, and get going. I vacuum more often because it's there and lightweight. 2-3 times a week, whereas previously I found weekly a pain.

If you vacuum a 4 bedroom house you may just get it to last a vacuum or i it may need recharging towards the end.

scrivette · 26/10/2018 23:32

The cordless one is brilliant.
I used to really dislike vacuuming but now it's so quick and easy.

HarrietSchulenberg · 26/10/2018 23:35

I have a Dyson cordless and it's brilliant. To the poster whose Dyson kept cutting out, it does that when there's a blockage. Empty it and clear out any debris that's got stuck, usually between the main unit and the first attachment, and it'll be fine.

Elbbob · 26/10/2018 23:41

If you buy direct from Dyson you can return it if you don't like it after 30 days. A great way to see if it works for you. I ended up keeping the V8 - I love it, it's made vacuuming so much easier. But I only have a 1 bed flat.

ForTheLoveOfDoughnuts · 26/10/2018 23:41

I've just brought a shark duo cordless. BEST £280 I've ever spent!

Brought this because my Dyson (has a cord) died.

ICJump · 28/10/2018 08:35

Just got a v10 and think I could get rid of corded vacuum cleaner

blondeemily · 28/10/2018 08:41

I love having a cordless, so easy to whip out! However I find that our Dyson does a good job on carpets but doesn't pick up so well on hard floors. Considering the cost, I'm disappointed with it to be honest.

Interesting reading as my future dil has been lusting after a dyson v10 for a while now. Chatting to my dyson repair man recently I asked his opinion of cordless vacuums. (He also mends all sorts of vacuums.) He said their power is vastly reduced to corded vacuums, I think he said suction on the latest dyson cordless was 65 compared to 1500 w on a corded. Apparently manufacturers are not allowed to make them any more powerful. I must say, the suction on my 8year old corded dyson when cleaning the stairs is amazing.

I then asked his opinion of Shark as so many people rave about them. He says they are an American company and it is difficult, if not impossible to source spare parts for them. Batteries for cordless cleaners are very expensive. He mentioned one brand, not sure which one, cost £110 pounds.

So, while cordless may be easy to use for a quick spot clean and light to use, they are not very powerful and their power reduces as the battery runs down.

I have been helping an elderly relative for the last 6 months with housework. At first I managed to vacuum up a full container of ‘stuff’ every week. It has now reduced to a very small handful proving how powerful and efficient corded dyson vacuum cleaners are. Yes, I often moan as I hump it upstairs, but I get satisfaction knowing that my carpets are really clean for all my efforts.
