We did in our bathroom & the paint chipped off. I think tile paint has improved though since then

cornsilk · 15/06/2007 19:54

If it's just 3 tiles it should be ok!

teafortwoandtwofortea · 15/06/2007 19:54

Yes and yes. Sorry!

On the plus side tiling only 3 tiles is EXTREMELY easy - go buy a chisel, 3 matching size white tiles and a small pot of fix n grout from B&Q. Chisel off the old tlies and then follow the instructions in the fix n grout to attach the new ones. (oh, and you'll need a clean sponge fro the end bit too )

sorry. my typing is shite tonight.

mummyplonk · 15/06/2007 20:09

Thanks, ok think I wont bodge it then if it's easy to remove,I'm off 2morrow tile shopping

please don't kill me if your wall falls down when you take the first tile off

(you may have to chisel/sand off the old grout so it can be quite time-consuming but worth the effort as oppose to painting IMO)

We painted tiles in our downstairs bathroom and lived to regret it. If you have any intention of keeping the tiles clean and hygenic....don't paint them. The paint just comes off and looks (as you may imagine) awful. If you don't mind repainting periodically, then go ahead!

I painted all the tiles around my bath, behind the sink and tiled worktop around sink. All in all a huuuuuugggggeeee amount of tiles. I painted them gloss white. I did this two years ago and apart from a little patch by the sink where it is come away it all looks as good as the day I did it.
(and yes, I do of course clean my tiles regularly but have not noticed any paint flaking off.

If you clean the tiles properly so the paint has something to stick to it is fine.

However, for the sake of only 3 tiles I would put new tiles up.

(In my case however we were looking at hundreds of pounds for new tiles, a plasterer (victorian house so whole wall would come down if we pulled tiles off) and a tiler which was not in the budget, and white painted tiles look better than the original streaky mouldy blue cheese look)

I would give it a try - we painted the tiles in our kitchen, and so did my in laws - no problems on either front and looked really good. It's worth a try as it might work and you can always replace them later if it doesn't.

Just make sure the tiles are really clean first - scrub with a brillo pad and some sort of detergent and dry completely - and use a little foam gloss roller, not a brush. Tile paint is really good nowaways and cheap too.

hippipotami · 16/06/2007 09:05

I think you have hit the nail on the head jojay - clean tiles properly, use foam roller, and tile paint now is so much better.

When I told dh and some friends I was going to paint the bathroom tiles they all gasped in horror. But two years down the line they all agree it was a good thing

newgirl · 16/06/2007 19:27

i think they always look like painted tiles and look rubbish after a year or two

for such a little area, get new ones and have ago at tiling - its very easy - you could spend more on tile paint and primer than on new tiles, adhesive and grout
