My breadmaker has just died!

I was looking forward to fresh bread this afternoon, but came home to a strong yeasty smelling lump of dough instead! (Although the machine is very, very old and I shouldn't really be surprised!!)

Any recommendations about a replacement would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have a lot of storage, and tend to use the dough setting the most, transferring the dough to a loaf tin, as I find the paddle in the loaf really difficult to get out. It's mainly used for white loaves and lives in a cupboard when not in use.

I'm wondering though, if a stand mixer would be more use? Although the option for breadmaking using just a machine is useful, and I don't have a great deal of worktop space and can't really see lifting a kitchen aid or kenwood or similar into a cupboard. I've always wanted a stand mixer though and wondered if I ought to make space... Are they worth cost, or would my old food processor and breadmaker be better?

Are there any machines put there that mix and bake bread without leaving a paddle in that needs wrestled and gouged out?

Any advice appreciated! Thanks.

I saw the title and bought stand mixer! Get one that’s handsome enough to leave out. I have very little out in my kitchen but do have my KitchenAid our and use it regularly for dough making and probably daily for other things.

redsummershoes · 21/10/2018 17:47

when that happened to us, I bought a bosch mum stand mixer.
no regrets.
I now bake 2 or 3 loafs at a time (slice and freeze the extra ones)

Littlesparrowherenow · 21/10/2018 17:53

That's two comments backing up what I'm thinking! Thank you. Just researching whilst I should be washing up! Will look at the two mixers you mention.

I'm just worried about missing the option to wake up to freshly made bread... Then I remember the faff trying to get out paddle whilst getting ready for school run!

no more fresh bread in the morning - but no more mixer hole in the bottom Grin

🤣

Or just make soda bread?
I've got a fabulous Russell Hobbs bread machine but very rarely use it now and make soda bread/rolls instead if I want that fresh bread smell. You cab be eating a slice within an hour or so of sorting out your ingredients.

Littlesparrowherenow · 21/10/2018 18:31

I'd not thought of soda bread... Another thought!!

I've had a quick look at the compact Russell Hobbs breadmaker, which seems a good price and has a timer.

Decisions decisions!! Thanks for all comments. Still not sure. Will be googling a bit more I think!

I have got this one, also have a kitchen aid that isn't used (gift) and a Kenwood chef titanium.

I cook a lot, bake a lot etc., etc.. I love the convenience of a bread maker. Making bread would be a once a week thing without it.

The hole in the bottom is much much smaller with a modern breadmaker and the paddle stays in the machine, no wrestling.

SunnySomer · 21/10/2018 18:40

I’ve taken to using my hands. Really nice and simple recipe from Dan Lepard, make two loaves at a time a freeze one, it’s minimal work and max deliciousness!

Littlesparrowherenow · 21/10/2018 18:47

the box of delights; Thanks for link to the Panasonic bread maker. It looks great. It seems to have a lot of options, and tempting to know paddle stays in bread machine too...I will be taking a while to investigate I think 🤔 😂

I have the Panasonic one as well but in white. Four years of excellent service so far, no problems at all (and I just put it on right before I read this thread).

Littlesparrowherenow · 21/10/2018 18:51

Sunny Some kneading dough is very therapeutic I know... But I never seem to have the time!

It is nice when I do, especially with our little one, but I need to try and save time. (Having said that I might be resorting to hand made over next week though whilst deciding 😁)

Thanks Talisin, I am tempted by Panasonic one...

I love mine OP, I make sourdough in it using the dough setting first and then the French bread option.

PickAChew · 21/10/2018 19:06

I use my breadmaker if I'm making a loaf but if I want dough, I use the kitchenaid mixer because it's easier to clean up.

Littlesparrowherenow · 21/10/2018 19:26

PickAChew, think you've just hit nail on head! I need to consider how often I make bread and dough, and go from there.

So many options out there, but I'm glad to have some recommendations about stand mixers and breadmaker.

I will be researching Panasonic bread makers if the paddle stays in. If anyone can recommend any others, that would be worth considering, I'd appreciate any comments. (I do still covet a stand mixer too... So seriously considering culling kitchen cupboards and reorganising. 😊Especially as Christmas is on the horizon!!)

I have a Kitchenaid and a Panasonic breadmaker. Both obtained late 90s and still working.

I use the breadmaker every day to make a loaf. Somethimes I take it out after a couple of hours and shape a focaccia type bread or some tear and share garlic bread for dinner, other times I leave it until it's a loaf. I love the way that I can chuck in the ingredients and come back to a loaf on busy days. And there's just one pan to wash up. The paddle rarely stays in the loaf, but of course, there is that hole.

I make sourdough using the Kitchenaid, but I tend to use it more for cakes meringues and the like rather than bread. I also use it for orange juice and pasta using the attachments.

Before buying these lovely machines, I owned a Morphy Richards breadmaker and Phillips mixer - both were OK, but the Kitchenaid and Panasonic are both in a different league.

Thebookswereherfriends · 21/10/2018 20:48

I have a Panasonic bread maker, about 6 years old now, excellent machine. The paddle on mine rarely gets stuck in the bread. It makes a lovely white and whole meal sandwich loaf, super pizza dough. Since I’m reducing plastic I’ve been using it several times a week.

Littlesparrowherenow · 21/10/2018 20:58

Really pleased to read two more comments about paddle not being embedded in loaf!

I think the Panasonic is my favourite at the moment, with a major kitchen reshuffle too. (In the hope I can squeeze in a stand mixer later!)

Those who own a Panasonic, is it easy to lift in and out of cupboard every other day, or is it heavy, and best left out?

OP posts:
Thebookswereherfriends · 21/10/2018 21:09

It’s not particularly heavy, but I leave mine out otherwise I would be less likely to use it. It fits in a corner next to my microwave.

Cynderella · 21/10/2018 21:29

The breadmaker is more portable than my mixer. I used to keep it on top of the fridge, but now I'm using it daily (I do slip when working full time and it's exam season), it's on a worktop in the scullery - it's not posh enough to be called a utility room - so I put everything in the tin while in the kitchen and then put it in breadmaker. Even though it's not very warm out there, bread rises because of the heater in the machine.

theboxofdelights · 22/10/2018 06:11

Mine is in a corner on the worktop. It isn’t heavy.

Rascallsall · 22/10/2018 07:23

I should probably start my own thread , but can any of you who love your Panasonic bread maker please recommend a recipe or two? Or a good bread making recipe book? I have had very little success. I also have a KitchenAid stand mixer. I am a reasonably competent cake maker.

Etino · 22/10/2018 07:25

Ref waking up to the lovely smell, I was up at 5 this morning (not for bread making!) and have made a batch of dough already. It’ll make naan for lunch and a loaf for this evening.
