Help! Put wash on with filled nappy, now all clothes smell

Somehow we got our washing and nappy bins mixed up for a full nappy and it's gone through the wash with a load of clothes. They all smell. I've given them another wash without the nappy but smell is still there.
I've picked out the cottons and am doing them on a 60 degree wash, then will try the synthetics on a 50 and hope for the best, but are there any magic tricks to get rid of the smell? Vinegar? Sunlight? An amazing chemical? Help! Some of my favourite clothes now smell of shit Sad
Do I have to throw the lot away? Please tell me this is salvageable

Two caps of zoflora in the drum on a 40 wash. Then wash again with normal powder and put a couple of caps of white vinegar in the fabric softener drawer. Hang outside after if you can. That should fix it! If the smell is still in the drum you might want to run it empty on a 90 with 2 caps of zoflora first.

Did you clean washing machine first before you put them back through wash? If not I’d do. Supermarkets sell washing machine cleaners.

DP ran the machine trough on an empty 40 degree wash Hmm

I'll do a 90 with vinegar once the current wash stops. I meant to do this first thing but in my excitement to sort the cottons and post on MN I forgot

40 degrees won't kill bacteria. If you're going to disinfect a machine I recommend you either run with washing machine cleaner in it, or at least with a bio detergent and at at least 60%.

As for the clothes - I'd do a 60 degree wash + bio detergent + laundry bleach and see how that goes.

You poor thing OP!

Have you tried drying the clothes and then washing them again? Sometimes DH used to leave things in the washing machine and they smelled fusty. The only way of getting rid of it was to dry before washing again.

Always dry clothes that smell before rewashing. Works a treat. If it's a disposable nappy line dry only or the jelly crystals will adhere to the clothes never to part again! Good luck!
