Ariel or persil?

Anyone used both of these for a comparison? I currently use Ariel but am thinking of changing over to persil. Also what fabric softener do you use?

dragonflyinn10 · 17/10/2018 19:34

@e1y1 thanks so much for replying and explaining I have got tide and downy via amazon but it is £££!!! I did think perhaps it's due to our water hardness /softness cost etc I think gain is deffo on my hit list ! You go to the USA and there's aisles in Walmart I could spend the day in there!! I think I'm a washing weirdo x my kitchen cupboards are like a washing aisle my husbands despairing I suppose some people (collect) ! Cups towels zoflora mine is deffo washing stuff I need help !!!!!! Thanks for your reply though xx

e1y1 · 17/10/2018 19:40

Haha I’m exactly the same. It got to the point whereby any time I was in a store I was coming out with some form of product :/ family members have benefitted from being gifted some though, as have foodbanks (some were never even opened - bad bad)

e1y1 · 17/10/2018 19:52

@whatsthestory123 - I had one for a while (big American thing) was lovely and fast and used a TON of water, so things got thoroughly rinsed, but I did find overall (personally) that it was WAY harsher on fabrics with the agitatior vs frontloader.

Anyhow ended up moving to a new house with no dedicated laundry room so it had to go - they do come up on eBay regular (you can get new from one or 2 places but they’re ££££)

Re why they have them vs us - I believe there is a specific answer to this (something to do with when fully automatic machines became popular in each country) but the exact reasoning escapes me. However, even in the US there is a slow shift over to front machines (or low water use top loads) American family and friends are ever increasingly switching when buying new, due to the big eco drive the world over they just can’t justify the water use of the old style top loaders, but you’re right, for washing and especially rinsing they’re fab

thanks for explaininge1y1

Ragwort · 17/10/2018 20:02

Am I stupid ? I cannot tell any difference in my washing whatever detergent I use, I just buy what's on offer and I never use fabric softener not really sure what its purpose is.

TeddyIsaHe · 17/10/2018 20:07

Ooh Ragwort I am a fab soft weirdo. I feel completely out of sorts if I wash my clothes in something other than the norm. Dd smells all funny at the moment because I’ve run out of my usual fabric conditioner (Comfort Intense Sky or somesuch) and using an Aldi one and it’s just not right!

I use Smol washing tabs and they smell divine.

ShowOfHands · 17/10/2018 20:14

DD and I both have to use Persil non bio. I have tried every powder going but DD in particular gets a horrendous rash with anything else. My Mum had the same problem with me and it seems DD has inherited the Persil Only gene.

Soontobe60 · 17/10/2018 20:15

If you use enough detergent to be able to smell it, you're using too much. It's bad for our skin, bad for asthma sufferers and very bad for the environment! Use half the recommended amount, and just a splash of fanric softener if you absolutely must!

Worieddd · 17/10/2018 20:17

Ooooh it’s a toughie.

I think they’re both pretty much up there as the best. I’m currently using Persil colour powder and it’s brill, smells gorgeous.

e1y1 · 17/10/2018 20:18

You’re welcome whatsthestory123

No not stupid @Ragwort - There’s so many things that can affect washing (water type, stains, fabrics, washing cycles)

It’s all personal preference I suppose,,, eg I find Ariel light years ahead for cleaning and keeping fabrics looking new, stuff does come out far softer with Fairy, Daz etc is good but not as good as...... I don’t care for Surf all that much and so on and so on,,,

but that’s just my experience for my washing. Some may think my chosen products are the worst thing ever. Suppose that’s why there is so many ones, and the formulas are forever being tinkered with, so something that I find good, may not be when “improved” and visa versa.

I’m going before I sound like a proper deranged loon Grin

redsummershoes · 17/10/2018 20:19

whatever I like the scent of. always bio powder.
detergents are all very very similar.

Zoflorabore · 17/10/2018 20:26

e1y1- you sound like my twin :)

We could have such an interesting conversation over laundry detergent Grin

I have a laundry cupboard in my kitchen and it's my pride and joy!

dragonflyinn10 · 17/10/2018 21:12

@Zoflorabore @e1y1 I've found my people!!!! £19.99 gain on amazon just in case you all need enabling !!! Xx

e1y1 · 17/10/2018 21:20

Aww thanks @Zoflorabore and @Dragonflyinn10 - definitely sounds like we’d have quite the conversation Grin and yes, I do loves my “stash” cupboard also.

Dragon - naughty!!! But admit I Have been eyeing it up, but I have more than enough already lol. If we all start putting orders in Amazon May start getting excited and ordering in more variants - nooo :)

Lexilooo · 17/10/2018 21:25

Used to use ariel but switched to Aldi own brand and haven't looked back

IncyWincyGrownUp · 18/10/2018 12:32

I buy the Ariel pro powder in massive 13kg sacks from Amazon. It’s less scented than standard Ariel but it’s got some serious cleaning power. It’s concentrated too so you need very little. A sack lasts me a year.

whatsthestory123 · 18/10/2018 23:17

That's interesting how much and how many do you wash for?

PersilOrAriel · 19/10/2018 08:43

Oh, a thread specially for me Smile

mrsoutnumbered · 19/10/2018 10:44

I was at a relatives house in the USA and washed the entire contents of my suitcase before I left - loved it! 😂 and no laundry to do when I got home which was a bonus.

mrsoutnumbered · 19/10/2018 10:45

I am using Asda's own at the moment and find it fine but have a bottle of method waiting in the cupboard. It smells amazing.

myusernameisnotmyusername · 19/10/2018 10:53

I changed to surf because it was on offer one day after always using Persil or Fairy and have also used Ariel and Daz. I was finding my washing didn't smell of anything really. Since using Surf it has that nice smell without being overpowering. I use Fairy fabric softener usually because it's better for the skin imo. But also like comfort.

Prettysureitsnotok · 19/10/2018 10:54

Only came here to say I'm so glad this isn't a baby name thread like I originally thought

(I vote for supermarket own brand...)

Flooffloof · 19/10/2018 11:36

My Tide powder has turned up, I went around the house finding things to wash so I can use it. Will update when it's finished washing.
Normally use Costco's own brand Kirkland. It's about £15 For a huge tub, lasts me about 9 months. Would last longer but I use it on the outside paving and DP uses it to clean the garage pit. And cups and the odd burnt pan etc.

redsummershoes · 19/10/2018 11:47

I also use the powder for cleaning floors, toilets, baking trays...
