Fleas, bed bugs? How to get rid.

Dd and I are being bitten by something. Lots of bites, often clustered. We vacuum regularly and wash bedding on jot wash so think we need some kind of spray for furniture ext. Google is not helping. Any recommendations?

You need to find out what's biting you first. We cam back from holiday one year to a house of fleas. I remember bites being in clusters - one of my kid's legs were covered in bites. The were red itchy lumps that dried into red spots.

If you have a lot of fleas in the house, you might see them. If you have animals and part their hair, you might not see fleas, but you might see 'flea dirts'. They look like black specks of dirt and if you put them on a wet cloth, you'll see blood.

Bed bugs ... I seem to remember reading that you can see them on the frame of the bed. Will look for you ...

My research suggests bed bugs most likely. Fleas second. Am going to try home base or Robert dyers for products for both tomorrow. Do one tomorrow and then the other a few days later.

OK, bed bugs: www.independent.co.uk/life-style/how-to-spot-bedbugs-and-get-rid-of-them-a8124251.html

Where are the bites? Looking online, the bites look similar to flea bites. I remember flea bites being mostly on feet, ankles and calves.

Cynderella · 10/10/2018 23:16

Do you have pets?

solittletime · 10/10/2018 23:20

DO NOT start cleaning bed frames, shuffling/vacuuming mattresses then reusing vacuum elsewhere etc...
If you suspect bed bugs first carefully try to find them and then do not disturb them or you will spread them all over the house!!! Professional help is the only way with bed bugs. Believe me

BlingLoving · 10/10/2018 23:22

We have Pets, de-fleaed to schedule. The main reason I think bed bugs is the bites are all over, often in clusters, while flea bites apparently congregate around the ankles. Will try spot signs in daylight tomorrow but either way, think product for both is probably safest way.

Solittletime - shit? Really? In the dark with a torch I didn't see any of the supposedly red rust/blood/ exp skeleton stuff but plan yo look tomorrow on actual daylight.

They are quite easy to spot, not that small. Hopefully for you it's fleas!

Cynderella · 10/10/2018 23:28

If your pets have fleas, you will see signs on them although it's harder to see on black hair.

This suggests you can get rid of bedbugs with a vacuum cleaner and bicarb: www.express.co.uk/life-style/property/1004350/bed-bugs-how-to-get-rid-of-bed-bugs

However, solittletime has learned the hard way that they are resistant. I would try with the vacuum cleaner and soda and if that fails, seek help. I doubt that the middle way of chemicals will be enough if vacuuming fails.

I can see how it's important to empty your vacuum cleaner carefully and to clean it thoroughly because this is also true with fleas.

TheClitterati · 10/10/2018 23:41

If fleas are in your bed they will bite you anywhere. They won't go looking for your ankles Grin

Hope it's just fleas. Hoover thoroughly and dispose of vacuum bag straight away.

Cynderella · 10/10/2018 23:54

Fleas definitely are not so fussy that they'll only go for ankles, but given that they jump out of soft furnishings (rugs and carpets, for example), naked ankles and feet are ideal for a snack. They will bite all over.

I remember my niece telling me how her husband walked into their flea infested flat (again, after a holiday), and she saw the fleas jumping on to him, so his white socks were covered in black blotches by the time he got to the end of their hall.

Salt. Sprinkle table salt liberally on bed, carpets etc. leave for several hours. Brush off the worst of it then vacuum thoroughly. Empty vacuum cleaner into wheelie bin.
