Help mice!!!

Hi,

I recently moved in to a property. It’s small block with 3 floors and I’m on the 1st floor. Last night I went in to the kitchen and there was a mouse. I screamed and ran out the room, I hate mice/rats etc. I could barely sleep because I was so scared. Woke up this morning & decided had to clean my flat top to bottom even though I am a very clean person so it’s not like it was a mess. I noticed some droppings behind the cooker and also in my son who’s 1 room near the radiator. I’m totally freaking out! Called the housing association who I am with and they basically said they can’t help! Went to Homebase and bought a few home traps. I’ve also put all my food is sealed boxes and literally bleached everything so they have nothing to eat. What else can I do? Will they eventually go? Thanks in advance.

Don't panic! You just have to block any mice-sized entrances to the flat. And catch the mice already in it.

They can squeeze through a hole the diameter of a pencil. Get a silicone dispenser and block little cracks and holes in the walls and window frames. Look especially at where pipes lead into the wall. Make sure that floorboards are covered. Also that there is no way they could get from another flat into yours.

Good luck!

Great advice by dragon, i’d use wire wool to fill in any gaps, they can’t chew through it.

Courtney10891 · 10/10/2018 21:50

I’ve actually noticed quite a few holes near radiators and also by the front door. I will seal them tomorrow. I know they can’t hurt you I just don’t like the thought of them in my house. Where do you suggest I lay the traps? Thanks for the replies.

Lay the traps where you found the droppings. Bait them with chocolate spread or peanut butter.

Courtney10891 · 10/10/2018 22:08

I’ve actually seen the droppings in a few places, behind the oven, in my sons rooms and some by the front door. Really hope the traps work

Poor you, I loathe mice too! Traps are best along skirting boards. Put them behind furniture or at the back of a cupboard / fridge etc. Out of sight for kids too.
Check daily. Peanut butter is irisistable to Australian mice - give it a go!
Steel wool is best to plug gaps.
Have also found a plug in ultrasound deterrent good, get a couple from your hardware shop.
And tip all food into glass or plastic containers. Mine ate through flour bags, sugar, heat packs, grains in boxes, it was horrendous. And then had babies in my linen cupboard ....eek

Hey guys, me here again the op. So update! We put down traps, didn’t catch anything and then last Friday caugh a mouse. That was enough for me and I decided to get a kitten hoping this would be the end of it. Got the kitten Friday. For the first time I managed to sleep at night and was worrying way less. Anyway this morning was tidying the living room. Picked the back cushion of the couch and there staring at me hidden in the corner of my couch was a mouse! Obviously screamed ran out the room and grabbed my partner. He said I was imagining it but when he moved the pillow it was still there!! It was like it was hiding from my cat. Anyways after ten mins of chasing it my cat got it and we managed to put it in a box and release it. Now I’m back to worrying non stop and crying. Why was it in my couch? I was sitting there ten mins before having my coffee, was I sitting on it???!! I only moved in here two months ago. I dreamt of having my own place but since moving here I feel so sad. Will they ever go away?

We had mice and like you it was horrendous. Old Victorian terrace and lots of gaps. Mouse droppings behind sofas and in the toy boy! I was horrified. We got rid of them eventually with traps we caught them and also sealing holes. But I still check behind sofas every week for droppings.

So good luck, keep the traps out and keep any food away, and seal every hole. We did the steel wire followed by expanding foam thing, which has worked we think

Courtney10891 · 22/10/2018 20:28

Thanks for your reply. How long did it take you to get to the bottom of it. I nearly died when I saw it staring at me today literally cried. They’re so small but it just takes you by surprise.

Don’t want to stress you out but it took us a couple of months, then they came back the following autum too

TheFifthKey · 22/10/2018 20:56

Biscuittime, I’m laughing at in the toy boy!

I got the council out for my mice. It cost £65, they came out to look around where the mice had been and put poison down (in special containers kids can’t get into - but they were out of reach anyway eg behind the sofa and under kitchen cabinets). Then I think they came back once or twice more to check it and refill poison as needed. Anyway that seemed to do the trick - I’d been trying on my own for ages and was getting very upset about it so it was money well spent.

biscuittime · 22/10/2018 20:58

Grin just realised ! It was toy box!

justme28 · 22/10/2018 21:01

In the toy boy hahahaha

EggysMom · 22/10/2018 21:02

We had mice very recently. Filled all the holes, but still we could hear and occasionally see them. Traps caught two, after a slow start our cat caught the other two.

Ours definitely didn't go for the peanut butter.

Courtney10891 · 22/10/2018 21:04

My housing association in with sent out pest control. They came last Monday and then today. He put down poison last week and some more today. What’s spooked me out the most is that is was sitting in my couch and didn’t even jump when I picked up the cushion. The pest control didn’t seem to help much, when I said I caught two he just laughed and said hopefully not many more then.

When was the last time you saw them? I saw one 2 weeks ago and put traps down but didn’t catch one until the following week. I could still hear them though it was like they were avoiding my traps. I’m hoping that’s it but I’ve so much online that one mouse can soom become 20 mice in less then two weeks. I have a very active 15 month old so scared he’s going to pick up mice poo z

eddiemairswife · 22/10/2018 21:16

Your kitten will deter them eventually.

Courtney10891 · 22/10/2018 21:21

That’s what I thought. But the muse was hiding on the couch which is where the kitten sleeps most of the time so surely the mouse wouldn’t be there?

I was
Plagued with mice every winter (old cottage) until I got a jack russel. I’ve not seen one since!

Chewbecca · 27/10/2018 13:43

My cat brings mice in, she doesn't deter them at all.
