Please help. DD had an accident - how do I clean school shoes?

DD wet herself and school shoes are soaked. I have them soaking in a bucket of hot water and washing powder. I rang m&s to see if they had any washing instructions.

They are leather. I think. Or at least part leather. So how do I get the smell out and clean them or do I accept defeat and bin them. She does have a spare pair and I am prepared for the meltdown tomorrow morning because she hates change.
Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I’ve aleays just given them a wipe. Wouldn’t have thought of going as far as you have

Piggyhoolier · 07/10/2018 14:24

Would have thought the soaking with detergent would be ample sufficient to have them clean and not smelling?!

I’d just have bunged them in the washing machine personally on a 30 degree quick cycle of 30 minutes and then stuffed with rags before drying to ensure they didn’t shrink. Most shoes I’ve treated that way come up like new.

If you've already soaked them id just leave them somewhere to dry slowly and if necessary buy odor neutralizing insert, e.g. charcoal.

My dd did the same and tbh I didn't soak, just let them dry out and sprayed with shoe smell spray. Haven't given them a sniff since but not noticed a whiff from the shoe box either

Bubblysqueak · 07/10/2018 14:28

Generally just sprits with anti bac and leave to dry.

The smell was super strong. I did think I just threw DS shoes in the machine but couldn't remember. Jeez talk about making life harder for myself. I just has a sniff and they still stink. Will rinse them off and leave them outside to dry. And hope for the best. Thank you.

I should add, she was wearing tight so the wee ran all down her legs and her shoes were like she had jumped in a huge puddle.i get the feeling she hadn't been for a wee for a loooong time.

If it’s biological soap powder the shoes will now be crunchy if leather.
My toddler is potty training wees in her shoes usually give them a quick sluice out, not noticed a stink

SirNilsOlav · 07/10/2018 15:48

Is there someone else around to smell them? I only ask because I was convinced DSS stuffy smelled of puke after an incident but when I appealed for help my friend took a sniff and promised it didn't at all - it was just stuck in my head that it did after I'd obsessed about it!

QueenJuggler · 07/10/2018 15:51

If the smell was really super strong, strong enough not to disappear after a soak in hot water and washing powder, I'd probably check that your DD hasn't got a UTI, especially if she's been holding in urine for a long time.

itsboiledeggsagain · 07/10/2018 15:53

I would have just left them to dry. How old is the child?

AuditAngel · 07/10/2018 15:53

I would have packed with kitchen roll to soak up the worst then put bicarbonate in to absorb he smell once dry

mrsoutnumbered · 07/10/2018 15:57

My daughter did the same once when she was in reception. I went as far as to wash them in the washing machine and they still stunk afterwards, so I binned them 😫

TimeForMy10thCuppa · 07/10/2018 18:29

Going to pop to the drs for a pre bottle tomorrow. And take in a sample. She is 4. She suffers with sore bits alot and holds her wee so it doesn't sting when she goes. Drs just prescribe her some cream for thrush and it's back a few months later.
DH is home now so will get him to sniff once I have rinsed them off.
This is why I prefer her to wear trainers to school, I can just toss them in the machine but she is a stubborn little lady and as long as the shoes are black and appropriate for school that is not a battle I fancy every morning.
Thanks again.

If you can still smell the wee one the shoes are dry, try sprinkling some bicarbonate inside them

FinallyFree123456789 · 07/10/2018 18:36

Bicarbonate is what i used on my daughters bed when she did this - sprinkle some in leave it then bash them to get it out :-)

steppemum · 07/10/2018 18:38

to dry them, stuff with newspaper. remove and replace every couple of hours.
It soaks up all the water, and in this case the smell too. Dries them much quicker.

Usually, once dry, they are fine.
I have often just sluiced out.

Use a load of shoe polish once dry to restore the leather.

and for sore bit, go back to using sudocream. At one point I would put a really thick coat of it on in the morning to take dd through all wees. Lots of sudocream, dry after a wee by dabbing not wiping, so you don't wipe it all off.
Nothing in bath water, and washed every night.

Fatted · 07/10/2018 18:41

You need to get her into the GP. It sounds like she has a UTI if she's holding her wee and it's smelly. You will need antibiotics rather than cream for a UTI.,

handmademitlove · 07/10/2018 18:44

Try cat litter! Designed to soak up and hold smell.

steppemum · 07/10/2018 22:20

the cream is not for the UTI, the cream is for the sore skin, which means it stings when she wees, so she is holding it in

ChishandFips33 · 08/10/2018 04:52

Bicarbonate suggestion here too - def works on sick smells

Think white vinegar is also a neutraliser - it works on BO clothes

Stuff with newspaper to dry out to prevent shrinkage

Maybe treat with Dubbin to soften/nourish leather again (if not patent)

PhilomenaButterfly · 08/10/2018 04:54

I used to just give them a wipe.

TimeForMy10thCuppa · 13/10/2018 17:34

Thanks all. She has been to the drs antibiotics prescribed. Bicarb thrown into shoes and the smell has gone. Took ages to dry though. Thanks again.
