It's me vs. toilet limescale and I am losing

I admit that I let it get very bad. Lived here for a year and a half and it's been building that whole time. (Does pregnancy and baby slightly excuse this? Not sure).

In the last 2 days I've tried- denture tablets, cola, white vinegar (undiluted with toilet water removed first) twice, all having been left for 2 hours and have a good scrub with brush throughout and after.

Although progress has been made, it is minimal. Some bits have chipped off at the top but the depth of the bowl is showing no signs of remorse.

Any ideas??

I got sold something called 'one stop' at a local hardware store but after looking at YouTube vids I'm way to scared to try it.

Get all the water out (plunging it with a loo brush can do it) then a bottle of the black Harpic plus, leave overnight and scrub the next day, does the trick. For me it was the only thing that worked at all. If it’s really bad and it doesn’t all come off in one go then after using the Harpic chip it all off then redo it overnight again Smile

@CryingMessFFS thanks, did you empty the whole bottle in to fill the bowl or just pour over the sides?

I just squirted it under the rim so loads ran down then squirted a load onto the lime scale part itself, enough to cover the whole inside of the bowl. I used a lot of it tbf - I got maybe 2 uses out of the bottle as the limescale was pretty bad (toilet hadn’t been used for several years!)

Thank you :)

I was going to suggest the Harpic too. It stinks to high heaven but it works.
Also I recently started using bloo blocks in the cistern and my toilet is constantly sparkly clean with no gathering of limescale. I've never liked them as we have always had septic tanks (so products are a big no no) but now I wouldn't be without them.

AprilShowers16 · 29/09/2018 21:09

I used a kettle descaler to do the bowl, I removed all the water from the bowl, boiled the kettle and poured it down and then added the descaler tablet. You can’t really do it for the rim but it works well for the bowl

We cleared DS’s revolting student toilet with vinegar and bicarb. A small bottle of one a whole container of the other. It makes a chemical volcano.
We then chipped off the loosened lime-scale with a piece of wooden coat hanger. It was strangely satisfying.

liquidrevolution · 29/09/2018 21:20

Pump a loo brush down a few times as it drops the water level (thanks pigletjohn for that info).

Then liberally apply the black domestos it's better than the harpic imo. Leave then scrub with brush. Repeat as necessary. Use toothbrush on corners or hard areas.

We have hard water plus we like (have!) to let yellow mellow at night so get limescale badly.

Ta1kinpeace · 29/09/2018 21:22

another harpic fan here

keepingbees · 29/09/2018 21:23

Yep I second the Harpic (or whatever oher brand does similar extra strength lines ale removal)
My last rented house had a toilet that was completely brown limescale below the water line when we moved in Envy Tried everything you've already tried and no joy. We still had to chisel it off with a toilet brush handle but this stuff allowed it to be broken off.

keepingbees · 29/09/2018 21:23

Limescale not lines ale obviously!

strumpetblowingatrumpet · 29/09/2018 21:25

We are also fighting the good fight against toilet limes ale. I found a couple of these tablets left overnight very good...

... followed by a jolly good scrub in the morning. I recommend a refresh with these every couple of weeks very effective.

Notmethistimehonest · 29/09/2018 21:26

Tesco does a toilet limescale remover. It is cheap and works really well when left overnight.

MyCatIsBonkers · 29/09/2018 21:26

Buy a big bag of citric acid, tip it in, let it sink to the bottom and leave it like that. Trust me, the next morning you won't believe the result. (My husband is a chemistry professor so this info came straight from the experts mouth.)

Floralnomad · 29/09/2018 21:26

Apparently if you spray with a little bit of wwd40 let it do it’s thing for a few minutes then scrub with a brush that’s supposed to work well .

WildFlower2018 · 29/09/2018 21:27

Didn't do mine for 4 years of living here. No excuse, other than I'm an idiot and I thought it was just old and knackered and that's how toilets go 🙈

I used some viakal and toilet brush and the rim bit and managed to scrub pretty much all of it off

MyCatIsBonkers · 29/09/2018 21:27
  • leave it like that overnight.
PeakedTooEarly · 29/09/2018 21:28

You are not taking this seriously enough OP Grin

You need brick cleaner to get heavy limescale of bogs basins and stuff. Take extreme care because it's acid. Sponge out the loo and let the limescale dry. Brush on the brick cleaner but wear eye protection and gloves. Big ones. Have no exposed flesh. It will fizz and bubble but keep brushing until it's all gone. Don't breathe in the fumes either. Brick cleaning acid is hydrochloric acid and will get it like new and it doesn't cost a fortune.

CAAKE · 29/09/2018 21:35

The citric acid works!

Livedandlearned2 · 29/09/2018 21:40

The harpic tablets are amazing, I use them if my customers have grotty toilets and they do the work for me.

Sameoldstorytime · 29/09/2018 21:54

Lidl limescale remover!!!! All the way. Plunge/sponge the water out, and then squirt in and leave for a bit and get an old toothbrush on it!

It's amazing stuff. Cleans everything. I've never known anything like it. You see the limescale fizzing up the moment the stuff hits it.

MadisonMontgomery · 29/09/2018 21:58

Black harpic. Get all the water out, pour in enough to cover all limescale, leave overnight then scrub.

FritzyMousey · 30/09/2018 09:21

Whatever product you use, get in there with a washing up brush, the back of a dish brush is great at chipping bits off
