Can I wash my King Size Ikea feather duvet in my 7kg washing machine?

Or is it utter lunacy?
My DH spilled a full cup of coffee on our duvet last night Angry and it obviously needs washing. I know they can be washed as I checked on the Ikea website but whether I can wash it myself or need to go to a launderette is another story.
Has anyone washed a king size feather duvet in a 7kg washing machine and lived to tell the tale?

Will it fit in?
My MIL asked me to wash hers as I have 9kg washing machine. And it wouldn't all fit in. She had to take it to the laundrette.

Sorry 😮

I wouldnt, even if it does wash it it wont spin properly. To be honest i wouldnt bother though, 8 would just sponge off/scrub off the worst of it.

Nanasueathome · 21/09/2018 07:28

As above
I doubt very much that it will fit into you washing machine
Launderette or dry clean are the only options

lolaflores · 21/09/2018 07:29

It will smell like wet dog forever. Dry clean it.

ShatnersBassoon · 21/09/2018 07:29

Even if you managed to shoehorn it in there, it isn't going to wash, rinse or spin properly.

I can get a double feather duvet in a 8kg washer but not a king size. Feather duvets do wash well so it's worth going to the laundrette.

SuperSange · 21/09/2018 07:31

I washed my 'washable' feather duvet once. It did indeed smell of wet dog after several very sunny days on the line.

Showpony2 · 21/09/2018 07:33

Take it to the laundrette, they have really big machines.

bumhead · 21/09/2018 07:34

So dry cleaners then? I wonder why Ikea say they can be washed if they're going to smell. Thank god I posted because I am crazy enough to have attempted this!
Thank you

I don't think it will fit, I can get a hollow fibre king size in our 8kg machine but there's only just room at the top. You'd need to tumble dry it too. Dc1 has a feather duvet & it washes really well but it would take days to dry properly outside & takes a good while (think 3/4 of a day) in the tumble dryer.

ourkidmolly · 21/09/2018 07:36

Just bring it to the laundrette for a service wash and tumble dry. They come up fab. I do mine every year when I swap from summer to winter weight.

AwkwardSquad · 21/09/2018 07:38

Yup, laundrette as per PP. I have a feather duvet and it’s had a service wash and dry several times.

MountainPeakGeek · 21/09/2018 07:55

Not a hope of it fitting in your machine. Our winter kingsize duvet is about as snug as you'd want to attempt to wash anything when we put it in our large capacity machine. Ours is 5.4 cubic ft (how they describe washer capacity in Canada) and we worked out that's equivalent to either an 11 or 12kg load rated washing machine in the UK market.

Furrycushion · 21/09/2018 07:59

You have to tumble dry them to fluff them up. I can fit a double in, I then partly dry it on the line & finish it off in the dryer. Our local dry cleaners charges £7.50 per duvet, whatever size so we take our larger ones there. They wash them, they can't be dry cleaned.

EcoCleaner · 21/09/2018 08:54

Our king sized hollow fibre won’t fit in our 9kg washer.

We take it to the laundrette and do it ourselves.

Just one thing, if you do wash it yourself, USE NON BIO POWDER. The enzymes in bio powder will start to break down the feathers otherwise. I’d make sure it’s powder too, laundrette washers don’t like liquids

my kingsize feather duvet definitely did not fit in my 7kg machine. I took it to the laundrette and hung it over the line during the hottest days in summer. It smells fine. Wouldn't fancy the chances of it drying well at the moment though.
