Making the switch to eco cleaning

mrsoutnumbered · 14/09/2018 11:34

I'm trying to make a switch to a more eco friendly lifestyle and one of things I'm doing is replacing my cleaning products with more eco friendly ones as they run out.

I'm wondering a couple of things:

-What can I use to clean my kitchen sink? What will shift the tea stains that build up?

-what can I use to wipe the toilets clean? At the moment I use those flushable bathroom wipes, which I then put in the bin rather than flushing. I have 3 toilets on 3 floors so don't want to be lugging stuff up and down the stairs!

I get the pink stuff from a pound shop sort of place in my local town.
Maybe try a hardware shop?

@WooWoo1000 yes I am currently using astonish glass cleaner and it seems to do the same. I think I will fill the bottle with vinegar when it's empty!

I've currently got a jar of white vinegar and water on the counter. Every time we have some citrus peel I add it to the jar. Hoping to make some nice smelling cleaning spray!

SnugglySnerd · 21/09/2018 21:30

To clean tea stains off the sink I sprinkle with bicarb, leave it for a bit then rub with a loofah scourer thingy. Rinse with hot water and buff up with a microfibre cloth. It's very satisfying.

VanillaSugary · 22/09/2018 08:40

@WooWoo1000 what sort of cloth did you use for your windows? I tend to use kitchen roll.

Thanks @SnugglySnerd, I have added a big box of it to my Ocado basket :-)

So far I am using:

Wilko eco surface cleaner
Ecover laundry liquid and softener
Ecozone shower spray
Ecozone bathroom cleaner

Will replace things as they run out. I really like the Wilko eco cleaner, it smells lovely. Not entirely happy with Ecover laundry stuff so am going to try method liquid and ecozone softener when that runs out.

I use microfibre cloths and dishcloths, all of which can be used again.

I think for the loos I will get some blue cloths (blue for loo!) and use the Wilko cleaner as it's anti bac.

Thanks for all your contributions to this thread.

There is a group on facebook for all herbal things including eco cleaners with amazing fragrances. Not cheap but gets good reviews. Its called Herbal Health & Home

Newspaper is brilliant for windows, just scrunch it up and use loads.

Juancornetto · 23/09/2018 17:39

Micro fibre cloths aren't great as they shed tiny plastic particles into the water system. Washable cotton dishcloths are a better shout in eco terms Smile

Squiz81 · 23/09/2018 21:52

Agree with above. I didn't know that and had stocked up on a load of micro fibre cloths. Then I read about it the dangers to the environment. There needs to be more information on this getting out to people.

Eco egg still wood fibre cloths. I've not tried them yet but plan to buy some from Amazon.

Givemeabreakt · 24/09/2018 04:47

@kmokmo Savers sell the Pink Stuff.

I was gutted when I read about microfibre cloths because I used them all the time and always had some in the wash. My daughter has taken them off my hands - I didn't want to use them, but I didn't want to bin them either, and she asked for them. I am using some old cotton cloths and bought a few bamboo ones - I'm just waiting to find out that buying bamboo is the new horror story.

I'm taking a break from cleaning the house and have just read this so I can do a live streaming of "Cleaning the stainless steel fridge with coconut oil" if you like.

I took a photo but the marks don't show up on it so you will have to humour me.

VanillaSugary · 25/09/2018 10:34

Ok, I can report back....

Coconut oil is definitely less effort and left no smears. I used a tiny ball which I smeared over the fridge door with my finger tips so that the oil melted onto the fridge. I then wiped an polished and is lovely! It's also cleaned off the line scale residue from the drinks dispenser.

Big hit!!

MamaOfTwoBoys · 25/09/2018 10:39

I love the YOU cleaning range. It's plant based but leaves things smelling so clean and fresh.

You buy a bottle then next time you just fill it with water and add a refill so it saves on plastic waste too.

RickOShay · 25/09/2018 15:00

Ooh Vanilla you are spoiling us Grin
