Shampoo bars

I am on a bit of a mission to reduce plastics so have returned to using soap bars but I've heard there are now shampoos that come in a bar form as well. As anyone found this product on the high street or is it likely to be available mail order only?

I have one from lush that seems to be doing the job nicely. You hardly need to use any and it lathers and cleans well.

I'm not the biggest fan of lush as I find their products to scented but it was an impulse buy to try a shampoo bar. I will try and find other brands next time to see how they compare.

Too scented

squeekyhead · 12/09/2018 20:00

I'll look out for that then. Due to a skin condition I have to be a bit careful what shampoo I use so if I have to compromise my principles and continue to use a bottled shampoo I will. But I'd like to at least try a bar once. :)

Lush. There's afew I've got a white one that's quite plain

picklemepopcorn · 12/09/2018 20:14

Lush I'd relatively expensive, although easily available. If you search online there are quite a lot.

Friendly Soap is made just down the road from me and all their soaps and shampoo bars are lovely. They are very environmentally friendly and all come in cardboard packaging.

Vitalogy · 12/09/2018 21:05

Do you need conditioner when you use these shampoo bars?

The Friendly Soap looks nice.

squeekyhead · 13/09/2018 20:55

I just looked at The Friendly Soap website - very nice indeed. Thank you for the recommendation Scootergrrrl. :)

I like the look of the friendly travel bar. Postage is a bit steep though, it's putting me off.

Vitalogy · 14/09/2018 04:53

Postage is a bit steep though, it's putting me off. I had a look for the potage charges but couldn't see the actually prices. I took it that it would be small parcel charge of £2.95, is that what you got picklepopcorn?

picklemepopcorn · 14/09/2018 06:54

It near enough brings it up to the price of a Lush bar.
I put something in my basket to find out postage. I'm mulling it over- it would make more sense to buy several as the postage doesn't go up. But I don't know if I'll like them!
I'm currently 'no poo', but may get a big order from here for Christmas presents (hamper type gifts)

Vitalogy · 14/09/2018 07:33

Yeah, that's it if you did a bulk order it would work out better postage wise.

Friendly soaps are fine but the shampoo bars left my hair feeling waxy and, well, not clean. Lush shampoo bars much better. I've yet to find a shampoo bar that comes highly recommended apart from Lush. Still hoping because I'd rather buy one that's SLS free.

I have invested in magnetic 'soap in the air' holders to keep them from going soggy.

picklemepopcorn · 15/11/2018 22:04

Cyndarella, have you tried rinsing with a splash of vinegar or lemon juice? The shampoo bars work much better if you follow up with an acid rinse.

Enidblyton1 · 15/11/2018 22:15

I’ve just tried a Friendly shampoo bar (I live a long way from Oldham, but they are sold in my local health food shop - so might be worth checking yours to avoid postage costs).
Can’t believe how good it is! Yes, it does leave the hair feeling waxy when you rinse and I didn’t have high hopes at first. But once my hair dries, it feels lovely and soft. I’m now a total convert.

Enidblyton1 · 15/11/2018 22:17

That’s interesting pickle. Do you literally keep lemon juice or vinegar in the shower? Or can you buy a special rinse?

TheVanguardSix · 15/11/2018 22:20

The Godiva bar by Lush is just gorgeous. Lush bars lather up beautifully and really are quite amazing. I'm a recent convert. I won't go back to bottled shampoos.

AsleepAllDay · 15/11/2018 22:41

Lush use SLS - detergent basically - so you might want to look for a brand without it if you have skin problems

Hopeislost · 15/11/2018 22:55

Another fan of Lush shampoo bars here! They sell solid conditioner bars too. They last absolutely ages if you keep them dry. I keep mine in a little Tupperware box in the shower.

Cynderella · 15/11/2018 23:05

Yes, popcorn, I tried a vinegar rinse with the Friendly bar. I just poured some into an empty shampoo bottle and topped it up with water. I tried really hard to like the Friendly bats, but I just couldn't get on with them. To start with, like enidblyton I thought I could live with the 'waxiness', but after a couple of weeks, my hair was looking worse and worse.

RaininSummer · 15/11/2018 23:10

I tried some from Amica but am now using them up as soap as I couldn't get past the waxy feeling on my hair. So want to find one I love but it gets a bit pricey trying lots.

BillywigSting · 15/11/2018 23:15

I would second the lush bars.

I have the karma one and the daddyo conditioner bar too.

The conditioner is really good. Has a sort of pine/woody smell that lasts ages and smells very fresh. Leaves my hair lovely and soft and shiny and with lots of volume. Also seem to be able to get an extra day out of washing it too. I just put a bit on the lengths and ends though and avoid my scalp.
