Is our brand new dining room table RUINED?

First World problem sorry .....

We've just got a beautiful dining room table in our new home. It's made from reclaimed wood and was expensive (£1000) and is the only piece of nice furniture we've ever owned so we were thrilled for our large family to have a strong, practical family table. Day 1..... child spills milk out of cereal bowl and doesn't mop up immediately. Huge dark stains that wiping with a damp cloth won't remove. I'm scared to use wrong product in case ruin table. We were told that the table had been oiled and sealed. Help!

If you were told oiled and sealed send it back in the morning. If you paid be credit card you should get them to help you.

I agree it’s not been sealed enough. We had this on a wooden worktop which we’d only given a couple of coats. Next worktop our lovely carpenter told us it needs at least 16 coats. If you can’t return it then I’d sand it down and re seal

Does sound like it's not totally sealed yet. Definatley go back and ask them to sort it, at worst if it's solid wood it should be able to be sanded and resealed.

Were you given any more oil and/or instructions on how to look after it?

Oiling does need some maintenance, the guide I was given is to oil it once a week for the first month, once a month for the first year and at least once a year for life but I think it depends on what sort of oil you are using. I tend to go for walnut, just the bottle from the supermarket.

I used danish oil on our oak worktop. The only thing that's marked it was when a visitor burnt a ring on it with a red hot pan Angry
But we sanded it out and re oiled it.

The worktop had about 5 coats iirc

The problem is it's already greywashed! Not sure it that makes it more complicated?
It didn't come with any oil.

It didn't come with any care instructions either and I can't find any in website.
It took 3 months to make as it was made to order and they explained it was a long wait due to the long process.
Not impressed with customer services so far. They suggest an application of liquid beeswax to help remove the stains but when I've googled that - it doesn't sound that simple. Plus - they haven't acknowledged that it shouldn't have happened in the first place.

Return it, it's not sealed properly if milk has ruined it.
