How do you clean your oven?

I just bought a new (second hand) electric oven. I sold my old gas one but had to clean it for hours as it was disgusting. I dont want this one to get in the same state.

So do I just wipe it down after each use with soapy water or what does everyone use? I hate oven sprays, I don't want to inhale horrible chemicals.

Any tips on how to stop a layer of burnt on grease building up?

I've learned its all about how you prepare your food i.e. covering grills, etc, with foil when cooking meats, etc. This will protect the surfaces and make the dreaded cleaning of cooked on black stuff a lesser thing.

Thanks. Do you cover the base of your oven with foil? I thought I read somewhere that you shouldn't do that .. haven't a clue why though.

I'm a bit rubbish at cleaning my oven but I do cover the bottom with those oven liner things - you can just pull them out and clean in the sink! Got them off eBay for pretty cheap.

Not the base, just the grill. I never find the base of the oven itself gets that dirty as such. Just a few burnt on crumbs perhaps. If your oven is that bad then I would just pay for a professional oven clean if you can afford it. Cleaning the oven is just the worst chore in my book.

Rarely and with a lot of resentment.
When I do it I use Oven Mate from Lakeland which makes it as painless as possible. Last time I was there I also got a sort of silicone(?) oven liner for the base that will hopefully make cleaning it next time a lot easier.
