Talk me through how you clean your loo

Seriously. I keep reading threads refering to hot water and gloves and I feel a bit ashamed. I squirt a bit of harpic and give it a once over with a toilet brush (which never struck me as the most hygienic way). For those of you who glove up, do you bin them afterwards? Wash them? For those who use hot water do you take s kettle up with you? Any other sparkly loo tips?

I don’t do anything different to the rest of the bathroom, cleaner of some description, a pink cloth for the loo only.

I don’t wear gloves. I just use a different coloured cloth and clean it outside first then inside rinsing the cloth through with bleach before storing.

It's easy to keep gloves clean, just lather with soap and very hot water while still wearing them, rinse and air dry. Due to chemical sensitivities I never use bleach, but vinegar and water spray is remarkably effective. Toilet brushes are a necessary evil I believe! They are washable and cheap to replace. I do use old microfibre cloths for outside the bowl, seat etc, and save them up for a 90 degree wash. I have stopped buying new ones but am still using the ones I have, I think they'll see me out :-)

Sorry all I fell asleep! Some great ideas on here. I definitely keep separate loo cloths, I am now on the hunt for cleaning gloves I can pop in the washing machine, I don't like the idea of washing them in sink or bath. Does anyone rate the silicone toilet brushes?

I have to say, there's some great suggestions here, but there's also some posts which I think are pretty ott. Single-use gloves, bleach a million times a day, disposable wipes even when you are using disposable gloves too. It's your choice, of course, but that level of relentless germ-zapping doesn't make me think "oh, nice clean loo" but "a bit Howard Hughes".

I would imagine Marigolds would go in the washing machine in a gentle wash if you wanted to. They are very sturdy. BTW I keep an old washing up bowl for handwashing and soaking, just a tiny round one which sits in the washbasin. Perhaps you could do that for gloves and cloths if you don't want to use the bath or sink for washing them?

Zoflora, wipe around with brush. Leave brush in loo (when cleaned with zoflora) for about 15 mins, flush, then take loo brush out. It disinfects the toilet brush if you leave it in the bog.

Good lord, I never clean my loos! The cleaner puts bleach down them and that's it.

Skyejuly · 04/09/2018 11:13

I use dettol and a cloth morning and eve. Then squirt toilet cleaner down it. Seems to work.

So the backs, the outsides, the lid and seat are all minging covered in fluff and pee stains?

Miljah · 05/09/2018 18:10

For the inside bit, I use the brush to give below the water line a scrub; I squirt around the inside of the rim with bleach, get the brush and make sure all the porcelain is covered, then I leave the brush upright in the bowl until next use so the bleach 'sterilises' the brush.

No 'unfortunate' stains on my brush!

Singlenotsingle · 05/09/2018 18:11

I just slosh a bit of bleach around it

HappydaysArehere · 08/09/2018 09:41

Replaced our Bathstore toilet seat the other day and the instructions was to only use water and soap to clean it. No chemicals at all. I had been using power wipes for the seat and harpic around toilet bowl.

Ariela · 08/09/2018 10:42

Use a water softener, so barely any issue, wipe round everything with a bit of loo roll and flush, sometimes add a Harpic black cleaning tablet to the bowl and leave overnight and flush.

TheClitterati · 08/09/2018 20:29

Some people on here do more to their loo every day than I do in a month or two Blush

CurtainARama · 08/09/2018 20:33

It does depend a bit on whether you have revolting children with rubbish aim, TheClitterati Grin

Bathroom spray on the outside bits, wipe with a cloth (or loo rol if I'm lazy) and bleach in the bowl and around the rim. Then flush and chuck cloth in the wash along with shower curtain and bath mat

Justkeeprollingalong · 25/09/2018 23:01

Quick rim wipe just with loo roll and scrub with brush when necessary. Twice a week, Bathroom cleaner spray everywhere, wipe off with loo roll. Bleach in the bowl and scrub with brush (I buy 60p toilet brushes from Wilko and replace them every month or 2). No one else seems to do this bit; every 6 months or so I take toilet seat off and clean under hinges. I'm astonished how much yuk collects there!
