Cleaning the shower screens

idontknowwhattohave · 01/09/2018 12:15

Any advice on what I can use to clean our glass shower screens? It's mainly soap deposit limescale and DH uses a oily e45 shower wash for his itchy skin. Despite using window cleaner and bathroom cleaner they're still a scummy smeariness. So, before I hit the supermarket detergent aisles give me ideas what to try next
Thanks

A poster previously recommended a microfibre cloth. I was dubious but it works brilliantly!

I use viakal weekly and my screens are clean.

pascalpascal · 01/09/2018 12:24

Barkeepers Friend is quite good. You can get it as spray, a cream and an abrasive powder.

MaureenMLove · 01/09/2018 12:46

Limescale remover, with one of those green plastic scrubby things. Then wipe dry with kitchen roll. Looks brand new again in minutes.

Watching!

Another vote for vikal here. I also have a squeegee and wipe the water off daily post shower a give the screen a quick spray of a cheap shower screen cleaner then do a vikal spray once a week and clean with a microfibre.

Enervator · 01/09/2018 14:07

What green plastic scrubby thing do you mean exactly?

Cynderella · 01/09/2018 14:11

I used to use microfibre cloths until I read about the environmental consequences of washing them, so now use a vinegar spray. Empty spray bottle - half hot vinegar and half cheap washing up liquid. Some essential oil helps overpower the vinegar.

Spray on all surfaces and then clean the bath, sink and loo. Go back to shower and wipe over with something scrubby/mildly abrasive. Rinse with shower and dry with old cloth.

It's taken a few weeks to gradually get rid of the limescale on the shower hose, but I have found it works really quickly on soap scum.

Thanks I got some vikal anadromous some other product too for shower screens - I've got microfibre cloths as well - something will do the trick, so I'll report back

This is a green plastic scrubby thing innit? Maybe not. Maybe it's made of nylon? Anyhow, I suppose a green scouring pad would have been a better description... Blush

Enervator · 01/09/2018 23:22

Ah, thank you! Wasn't sure if that was what you meant, or some new magic :)

Auldspinster · 02/09/2018 09:07

A dishamatic is good - it has a green scrubby bit on the end and if you fill the handle with equal amounts of fairy and vinegar tiles and shower screens come up lovely.

OrianaBanana · 02/09/2018 09:09

Yes the squeegee to remove the water post-shower really helps.

AmabelleOnabike · 02/09/2018 09:12

I use Cif and it works.with a scrubby sponge. Sometimes I polish after with a microfiber cloth.

theboxofdelights · 02/09/2018 09:57

Forgot, I also use this every second day when I am in the shower on everything, tiles, shower, glass chrome things.

It smells lovely and isn't too chemically.

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 02/09/2018 17:24

I used to use microfibre cloths until I read about the environmental consequences of washing them,

What are the consequences of washing them? Confused

MissCherryCakeyBun · 02/09/2018 19:03

Yeah I'm thinking using and washing microfibre cloths has got to be better than buying plastic bottles of random chemicals?

MissCherryCakeyBun · 03/09/2018 01:03

That's a link to a company selling Bamboo cloths.....?

I did some research and this is a more balanced viewpoint on the microfibre cloths...... and seems you need to be aware of all acrylic fibre/fabrics

Skyejuly · 04/09/2018 11:18

I use the windolene polish (cream not spray)

Cynderella · 04/09/2018 12:02

There's loads of stuff online about microfibre cloths and the problems caused by washing them. Bamboo cloths are often marketed as a better alternative.

Yes, I believe it's a more general issue with man-made fabrics, but I think cloths and fleeces are often cited as particular examples. I imagine that cloths are a bigger problem than some clothes because they tend to be rinsed and washed so often compared to, say, an acrylic cardigan.
