Steamer vs iron

I'm thinking about getting an upright steamer for the items I need to iron. I don't iron much - just a couple of dresses and jumpsuits. I am so bad at ironing: they never come out very well and it always seems like a faff.

Anyway, I worked in a clothes shop years ago and we used to use a steamer, it was like magic. Now I see that you can get domestic ones too. Does anyone use one regularly and would you recommend?

I have a fairly cheap one from Argos or Amazon, sure it was about £15 and it's fantastic. I only did the bare minimum ironing before (there's a million other things I'd rather do) but I haven't ironed since I bought the steamer a couple of years ago.
It gets creases out of clothes and makes them look lovely. I hang clothes on a coat hanger on the curtain pole in my bedroom and the steam goes out of the open window.
The only thing I've found it's not good for is woolen jumpers, but cotton/ jersey/ denim etc it's great for.

Thank you! Your post reads as if you've got a handheld one (I.e not the big ones with integrated clothes hanger) so I'm now really interested in one. I was a little bit put off by having to find space for a big machine.

Yep mine is a little handheld thingy, similar to a travel kettle. It's fab! Definitely invest.

Between DH and the DSs there are 15 shirts a week that get ironed in this house - plus anything of mine which needs it too! I just bought a Tefal steam generator iron and it works like an absolute dream. I was watching DH iron tonight and literally one pass of this steamer and the creases were gone. You can do upright steaming too.

It was a bit more expensive than £15 though Blush

What make is it??

NewIdeas not sure if that question was to me? We have the Tefal GV8932 Pro Express Plus (and love it!) It's bulkier than a normal iron for sure, but it's lighter since you're only holding the iron part and the water is all down in the tank rather than in your hand. Definitely the right tool for when you have a big basket of ironing and do it all in one mega session once a week.
