what do you do about spiders?

DH and I both think they do a job (killing flies) and so we’re pretty tolerant. However, I’ve noticed a lot of spiders in one place, some of them very thin, and I think there’s some time servers who are just messing up my house with dusty cobwebs. DH says the thin spiders are a different species. I think they are ineffective spiders and they should be the first to go. So I hoover the cobwebs and then some of the spiders. Then, I feel very guilty. This all seems a bit arbitrary. To be clear, I have no time for flies whatsoever.

So I have three questions really. Firstly, what’s your approach to spiders and cobwebs around the house and, secondly, should I feel guilty about all the killing? Thirdly, why are some spiders so thin?

I waft the vacuum cleaner around the cobwebs - did it this morning in fact. I think one of those thin, er.... spider-y things might have been collected too. Makes me feel a bit guilty too. Most of my spiders seem to live in the electricity meter cupboard or behind the bookcase in the hall. They don’t bother me, and I don’t bother them. I don’t care for those big hairy brown things that appear occasionally in the bathroom;
I usually collect them in a tissue and drop them outside through the window.

Singlenotsingle · 28/08/2018 17:39

I get do to deal with them. He puts a glass over them, slides a bit or card underneath and puts them outside. He won't kill anything on principle.

Dodie66 · 28/08/2018 17:42

I e got a bug catcher that sucks them into a tube so we catch them and let them go outdoors

gingercat02 · 28/08/2018 17:54

Hoover up the webs when I remember but leave the spideys alone. I read somewhere that house spiders die of you put them outside (may be nonsense)

Dodie66 · 28/08/2018 18:04

House spiders come into your house in the autumn but live outdoors the rest of the year.

Idbemonica1 · 28/08/2018 19:11

Am in the minority here, all spiders get vacuumed up. I cannot stand them and could never get close enough to catch and release outside. I have just purchased an expensive can of spider repellent to try to reduce the number of autumnal visits Sad

Topseyt · 28/08/2018 19:15

I scream and yell if it is a big one. If it comes anywhere near me it might get clobbered.

I will vacuum them up the Dyson. DH will catch them and put them out.

HandbagCrazy · 28/08/2018 19:47

I leave the skinny spindley ones alone - they tend to lurk in the high ceiling corners and someone once told me if you have them you're a lot less likely to get the huge ones (I have no idea if this is true).
I use a brush thing (looks like a giant toilet brush with an adjustable handle) every so often to collect up the cobwebs.

If we get the thick scary ones they tend to be on the floor and the dogs eat them (terriers). I used to feel bad but I figured it's survival of the fittest - the clever skinny ones stay up high and survive 🤷‍♀️

Singlenotsingle · 28/08/2018 21:01

Apparently they don't like conkers

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 28/08/2018 21:17

Ignore them. But then, I do like them and where I live they are not dangerous

Beamur · 28/08/2018 21:21

I dust cobwebs but ignore spiders. They don't bother me.

Moominfan · 28/08/2018 21:22

Say hello and go about my day

OrdinaryGirl · 28/08/2018 21:30

A brown speckled outdoor spider made her home high up on the inside of our kitchen window. She catches flies for us, and sometimes we shoo them into her web. We called her Charlotte and she's quite the pet now.

House spiders, with the thick black eyeliner legs, the ones that charge at you unexpectedly- they get caught with a glass and paper and politely evicted. 😠

YourMilkshakeIsBetterThanMine · 28/08/2018 21:38

We have a lot of spindly ones that get scooped up and released. It's probably the same ones each day but we keep on scooping. We also have two huuuuge ones. One is under the bed. His name is Bruno. He is pretty shy but he pops out every few days and we haven't caught him yet. It's been two weeks so I think he just lives here now. Augustus roams freely. He's slightly smaller than Bruno but much braver. He likes the element of surprise and gets a kick out of startling us.

Chirrup5 · 28/08/2018 22:47

The thin spindly ones are rafter spiders a completely different species to the huge hulking house spiders. In my house the get hoovered or clobbered cos I fucking hate them all.

ComeTheFuck0nBridget · 28/08/2018 23:21

DH will trap them and release them when he can. But I am ashamed to say that if I see them and he's not around, I kill them. With a spray. I feel really, really guilty about it but I'm terrified of them.

Lynne1Cat · 28/08/2018 23:26

I NEVER kill any spider. Like you say, they get rid of flies (dirty things). I don't know what the think ones are called, but we've got one in the downstairs toilet/utility room. It doesn't bother me, so I leave it alone.

Chirrup5 · 29/08/2018 01:10

I'll leave them alone when they leave me alone but I don't appreciate the long legged fuckers rushing at me when I'm minding my own business reading a book sat up in bed or worse relaxing in my bath - if they invade my space they will feel my wrath!

ooohsopink · 29/08/2018 02:40

Ive got a beautiful orb spider living in my kitchen window - he catches flies for me!

I leave all spiders in the house - they're really not interested in humans Grin

PhaedrasChocolate · 29/08/2018 02:44

The thin spindly ones kill the big brown house spiders.

I too hate them all... but I'm happy to leave the spindlies alone for that reason. Game changer.

Vitalogy · 29/08/2018 03:06

Nice to hear you care so much OP.

what do you do about spiders?
Frogpond · 29/08/2018 03:21

I kill them. Bloody horrible things. In spring I use lots of outdoor surface spray to keep them out the house.

Dottierichardson · 29/08/2018 03:25

OrdinaryGirl exactly the same, leave the tiny/skinny ones, evict carefully the large, scary-looking ones.

Vitalogy · 29/08/2018 03:33

I kill them. Bloody horrible things You do know we'd be plagued by flies if we didn't have spiders, they're part of the ecosystem.

Monty27 · 29/08/2018 03:35

If you believe that conkers abate spiders apparently you should pierce the conkers Confused
I vacuum them. Apparently if you put them outside they find their way back to their babies. In the webs. Shock
