Hello, I’m debating getting a set of new cutlery. I’ve only ever had stuff from the likes of Sainsbury’s and Robert Dyas which looks ok for a while and then just loses its shine and goes a funny colour. If I get a decent set that says 18/10 will it keep its shine or will it also tarnish (not sure that’s the correct word - maybe oxidise?) like the cheap stuff. I’m thinking specifically of Robert Welch at the moment because I used it somewhere and it seemed nice.

Thank you.

Big fan of Robert Welsh, here. We used it at a hotel on our honeymoon, and started collecting enough to use it all the time. Some shops have a limited selection, buying it direct from https://www.robertwelch.com gives the widest possible selection. We have satin finish, all still looks like new.

Thank you, I think I’ll have to go and see if I can see some in a shop before I decide. Not sure between satin and not satin ( can’t think of what it’s called!)

You can buy good brands at decent prices from TK Maxx/HomeSense.

I've just bought new sets of Dartington cutlery from Homesense.

I agree with Wowfudge. TK Maxx is the best bet. I bought a dartington (sp?) set 10 years back and they look lovely and shiny.

We have Robert Welch and it's fantastic - some of it over 20 years old and still looks like new. The designs are beautiful and the quality is wonderful.

The Robert Welch shop in Bath is really worth a visit if you are near that part of the world and their website is good. John Lewis stock some of the range and I have picked up the odd item from TK Maxx too.

eBay for Welch too...used can be great (not different than using cutlery in a restaurant!) If you use a dishwasher maybe dry them to prevent spotting

Thanks everyone, I didn’t think to have a look in TKMaxx. I’ve never heard of Homesense before so maybe there aren’t any near me. I had a look on eBay yesterday but the prices were the same or more than in the shops. Sadly not near enough to Bath for a cutlery trip! I think you’ve all helped me to decide that I do need nice shiny knives and forks now!

If you find something you like in TK Maxx buy two sets if it's a set of four of each piece - you're unlikely to find more at a later date.

hmmwhatatodo · 29/08/2018 13:40

Well, I made it to TK Maxx yesterday to find out that the cutlery ‘section’ consisted of 2 boxes of Jamie Oliver cutlery (really?!) and 1 box of gold effect cutlery 😤

Whereabouts are you? TK Maxx only has lower stocks of things like cutlery if there's a sister HomeSense store nearby ime.
