It's a nightmare. Amazon - there is a really good review that explains what you need to do.

Sticky lint remover sheets was what I found most useful. Went round all the edges of the carpet. It lifted the rice, eggs and larvae.

Clean - hoover - buy carpet moth spray - use - hoover - clean - spray again.

Vinegar is your friend. Check and clean under furniture.

We're still fighting them.

They are a mare don’t ignore whatever you do- get everything off the floor you can- no unnessary storage on the floor at all. You can get very good moth sticky thingies in Lakeland they attract them so you will know if you have got lots because you will find them all stuck to it after a day or so.
Put them on the carpet near where you see the moths. If your seeing them regularly in corners of room they may be breeding. Happens in places like edges of carpets under beds or furniture where is can be a bit dusty or where food may have been spilled and gone unnoticed. The paper things I mentioned are the best thing I’ve used. If I thought I had them again I’d be hoovering most days especially edges to try and make sure they didn’t eat my carpet. (again.)

They ate my carpet away completely in one hidden corner of the living room. In the end the only way we got onto of it was to dump the lovely wool carpet and replace it with a manmade fibre one.

OneStepOneStumble · 27/08/2018 00:18

Unfortunately I can't replace the carpets as I'm in rented!! I can't sleep knowing they're there but there's nothing I can do tonight is there? Currently picking them off the floor with tape which seems time consuming and possibly futile...

They are bastards! The larvae can live forever it seems so you just have to keep on it.
We got a spray from amazon. Spray, hoover, spray again plus we put down little moth repellent pad/strip things from Lakeland ( I think!)
They decimated under the bed and rug and storage. Did I mention them being bastards?!

OneStepOneStumble · 27/08/2018 01:00

I'm honestly wondering if it'd be better to pay fumigators because I'm so terrified I won't be able to get rid!!! Worst thing is we're going on holiday this week so it's another week they have to thrive!!!!

Thanks for recommendations I guess I'm off to Lakeland tomorrow. Currently compulsively washing anything soft furnishy that I'm not currently using...

I've had a look for the strips in Lakeland and can't find them 😭 anyone know what they were called or if I can find them elsewhere??

I’m using acana moth sheets (not sure of exact name). You can get them in John Lewis. I didn’t find moth sprays to be useful. I’ve been battling them forever (wool carpets) but these Acana sticky strips do attract them if you leave them in the right places. My main problem is under a very heavy wardrobe that I just can’t move so I’m not really sure what to do. Fly sprays don’t seem to bother them.

TerfsUp · 27/08/2018 13:43

My sympathies, OP. I had them and had to take the rug to the tip as well as just about steam clean the entire room.

But it does sound like you've had some good advice so I wish you the best!

Carrrotsandcauliflower · 27/08/2018 13:58

Hi this is the link to the strips- they have changed the name of them sorry- you can buy below the traps but to be honest you only need them if your going to hang them up- I thought they weren’t useful. But but the replacement pads- that’s what they are calling them now.

Carrrotsandcauliflower · 27/08/2018 14:00

We had them under a piece of furniture that we couldn’t move- if you can get around somehow you would be able to get a sticky paper or pad under there it will attract and trap all newly hatched moths so they won’t be able to keep breeding- gross I know but if you can keep replacing the paper you might get somewhere.

PickAChew · 27/08/2018 14:01

You can get DIY fumigator bombs. Might be worth trying.

OneStepOneStumble · 27/08/2018 20:57

Thank you so much for all your advice!!! Ordering the pads now. I've spent my day cleaning anything soft like blankets, quilts and cushions and hoovering like a mad woman. It feels like a start anyway 😢

We knew we had them because we kept seeing them in the corner of the ceiling in one room, but the damage was to the edge of the carpet where it meets the wall- the lava eat away the carpet tufts and leave it baldy so if you can manage to hoover the little blighters up you might get away with it. Good that you know where they are and hopefully they will just be in the one place. Smile

frugalkitty · 28/08/2018 09:50

We had them a few years ago and it took months before I felt they were gone. Even now I keep moth traps in the downstairs rooms. The products that worked for us were a carpet moth powder from Homebase, Black with a red lid I think, used every week round the whole room, even lifting the carpet and powdering the underlay and floorboards in the area they'd eaten. Also look at moth killer uk (I think) for the traps, you get sticky strips to change out once a month and they attract the me moth which breaks the reproduction cycle. Hoover religiously every day/every other day and do everywhere, under furniture and along skirting boards, and empty the hoover after every use. It's a right pain but will be worth it in the end. They're buggers!!

purplegreen99 · 28/08/2018 18:46

Just posted on a newer thread and then saw this one. This spray worked for me - www.amazon.co.uk/Rugremedy-UK-Ltd-Carpet-Killer/dp/B005EGVCX4/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=carpet+moths+killer&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1535477031&sr=8-4
I sprayed it all around the edges of the room & under furniture after a mega clean, dust & hoover of everything (including hoovering curtains), and then another spray after a couple of weeks. It was about a year ago and no sign of carpet moths in the house since then.
