Talk to me about Soda Streams...

Are they any good?

I love sparkling water but I am so conscious of the amount of unnecessary plastic waste that comes from having bottled water. I'm wondering if a Soda Stream might be a way for me to get my fizzy fix without generating loads of bottles. They all go in my recycling but I am seeing more and more news stories about how they often end up in landfill, so am keen to find an alternative.

We have a Power and I love it. It is a bit more expensive as it is electric, so you don't have to pump it to make the water, just push a button. We went through so many bottles before, it's really nice to not have to store them or lug them home from the shops.
My recommendation would be to see if you can buy it from somewhere other than soda stream, as when we've ordered bits from them it has been sooo slow, and the customer service has been rubbish.

Love ours, we have a power one too. I love sparkly water, don’t bother with any of the syrups but sometimes add the sparkly water to fruit juice. Use it all the time, we have 5 of the bottles so always have a cold one in the fridge ready to go. It’s my most used kitchen equipment after the kettle I think!

We bought one and it is sitting there unused. It just doesn't get the water fizzy enough so when you add the flavouring it knocks all the bubbles out. I didn't realise until DH came home with it that there are hardly any sugar free flavours either which makes it pretty useless to me.

My husband tried to use ours while I was at work. Didn't look at any instructions. For some reason but a tsp of bicarb in the still water, then the syrup, then attached to the machine. It exploded everywhere 😂

I've found a lot of the flavours taste very odd but cost effective and environmentally friendly for fizzy water.

daisychicken · 29/08/2018 08:58

I have one - you just push the button to add the gas so no electric or pumping of the bottle needed. The only time i find it not as fizzy, is when the gas bottle is almost empty but that does last me about a year.

I only use it for sparkling water so never looked at the syrups but I sometimes add lemon or ginger slices etc for added flavour. For me it's perfect but if you drink alot of fizzy drinks/use syrups, then it might not be as cost effective or possibly as good flavour wise

I has been years since I have thought about Soda Stream, we had one when I was a kid.

Do you still have to refill the gas canisters? Or has technology caught up there somehow. If so i remember them being a little pricy. And that was 30 years ago.

gaggiagirl · 29/08/2018 09:01

We've use ours every day. We add normal squash to the fizzy water the soda stream syrups aren't worth it.

thenorthernluce · 29/08/2018 09:09

I was you four years ago, disheartened by the number of plastic water bottles in my recycling bin. My husband bought us a soda stream and it’s ace! We just use it to carbonate water, not to make other fizzy drinks. We bought the bog standard, cheapest one and it was ace. Argos do a scheme where you pay more for your first gas canister, then less for subsequent canisters when you bring the used one back. When we use it everyday, we use a canister every two months.

VimFuego101 · 29/08/2018 09:12

We just use it to make fizzy water with too. It works really well. I originally bought it because I read on here you could fizz up cheap wine into prosecco but I haven't tried that yet!

poshme · 29/08/2018 09:18

We have one got exactly your reason.
We keep a couple of bottles of water in the fridge & fizz them up when I want a drink. Never use the syrups- just drink fizzy water.

If you try fizzing apple juice to make your own appletize, use less gas or it'll explode everywhere. Smile

wowfudge · 30/08/2018 18:30

To the pp whose husband put bicarb in the water, he was probably thinking it's just like a soda siphon, but a teaspoon is rather a lot!

newtlover · 31/08/2018 20:41

electric soda stream? can someone link?

LuluBellaBlue · 31/08/2018 20:45

Love ours, again just use it for water or sometimes add our own cordials / fruits etc but never bothers trying their syrups

Sabulous · 01/09/2018 08:28

Newtlover it's called Power.

FusionChefGeoff · 01/09/2018 08:32

Love it!

If it's not fuzzy enough, just give it another blast - that's what I do.

eurochick · 01/09/2018 09:37

I bought one for the same reason. I've had it since January and use it every day. I'm not sure any cheaper but it saves plastic waste.

GooodMythicalMorning · 01/09/2018 09:42

We used it for a while. It was a novelty. The flavours are rubbish and found the canisters expensive so not cheap overall.

It’s a great idea but not sure I can justify spending so much on the machine. I know you will make it back over time but wow!

mommybear1 · 01/09/2018 12:59

I loved mine but found it didn't carbonate the water as well as purchased water and we went through canisters like they were going out of fashion so I gave up and went with ALDI 17p sparkling water instead Grin
