How do you get more than 3 slices out of a Malt Loaf??

I adore malt bread, but when I try to cut it into slices it squashes flat and goes all deformed. There must be a secret way to get lovely ladylike slivers, mustn't there?

cut it through the middle lengthways and smother with butter like my DH does and you will never have this problem again.

misdee · 03/06/2007 21:44

ladfylike sliverS? no no big wedges with butter.

MrsBadger · 03/06/2007 21:44

use a really, really sharp serrated breadknife and a sawing motion - don't press down.

UCM · 03/06/2007 21:44

Or use a very cold knife

UCM · 03/06/2007 22:21

You actually got me to go and eat the lot!

madoldcatlady · 03/06/2007 22:53

Tried the "sliced" ones sleepycat. But they're just not sliced are they. They have random cuts made half way through them, leaving me to mutilate it a bit more!

LOL UCM, will try your DHs technique. I know what you mean Misdee, BIG wedges with heaps of butter are the way forward!

I've tried not to press down Mrs. B but my primative greedy inner hog takes over and I hack it to bits with the nearest available utensil!

I actually wondered if someone would suggest freezing it and slicing when frozen then defrosting! But that would involve planning and not scoffing.

This is one of those things I've always wanted to know too! Will try the cold knife. I have tried a serated knife, the sliced loaves, and always end up with squished chunks. Lovely with lots of butter, but not if you want a loaf to go round 4 people!

Skribble · 03/06/2007 23:01

Buy two loafs to get more slices , should be quite thick slices anyway with almost as thick layer of butter, now butter mind not any of your healthy low colesteral stuff.

weebleswobble · 03/06/2007 23:02

I do the cut it lengthways method with thick butter when the dcs are asleep. I really must dispose of the wrapper elsewhere though. They see it in the morning and moan...tut!

My colleague at work used to just butter one edge and then bite the whole "loaf"

Lol at "I got 6 slices out of mine", bet they've all gone now though haven't they

Will they reach work ???? Will there be any left by break time ????? Will there be any by lunchtime ??????????????????????? Ooooohh never knew malt loaf could be so exciting

hotcrossbunny · 03/06/2007 23:19

Malt loaf is one of the things I can eat on my very complicated list for faddy dieters! I eat loaves and loaves of the stuff. I find buying the extra large loaf size means I get more slices out of it Don't bother with the pre-sliced stuff - it always seems to be all dried up and old.

Saw it very quickly but lightly. If that makes sense.
(P.S. MadOldCatLady - how is your mum?)

BishyBarneyBee · 03/06/2007 23:29

like others said serrated knife and hardly any pressure - with non-cutting hand kind of hold the rest of the loaf quite firmly - like you are holding it up whilst you slice.

madoldcatlady · 04/06/2007 08:21

LOl at all the interest in cutting bread! Thanks for your suggestions.

TooTicky, how lovely of you to remember! She's doing ok(ish). She came off the Prozac (with GPs consent) as she felt it made her worse and GP agreed that in a few people that can happpen.
She then went onto Propranalol and another anti-depressant (sorry can't think which one ATM) but she quickly decided that they aren't for her either. She's got an appointment tomorrow with ENT about other problems, but her GP has written to them to see if they can offer any suggestions i.e. balance/inner ear related.
I offered to go with her but she wants to go alone. I think she's worried I'll push them into telling her it's psychological, which she is refusing to acknowlege as a possibility.
She's not entertaining the homeopathy route at the moment as she's sure it will turn out to be a physical cause like MS or something similarly awful!

Sorry for the long waffle, thanks again Tooticky.xx

I really hope things get better for her. Just shout if you do want any homoeopathy info in the future.
