Im so embarrassed!!!

Ok so yesterday i woke up covered in bites especially around my feet and ankles. Metioned to Dh we must have had a mosquito in the room as i had been bitten to death. This morning got out of bed and whilst walking to toilet noticed a FLEA on my leg!!! (I know its a flea, managed to trap between fingers and looked it up) I obviously freaked and started stripping the bed, in the space of doing so another FOUR jumped on me!!! I imediately bagged everything up jumped in bath and rushed out to buy flea treatments. We dont have any pets, how on earth has this happened!!!!??? I am so upset and creeped out. Cant seem to see them anywhere but our bedroom but am going to treat the whole house top to bottom. Has anyone else had this with no animals in the house? Im so confused

We’ve only ever had them due to pets so not sure how you’ve got them. Hopefully someone with some ideas will come along soon. Don’t blame you for being upset but don’t be embarrassed, it’s just one of those things. My advice is Flea bombs & hoover. A lot (with flea collar in hoover bag). And repeat. Hoovering every day for a week. They like to hide in carpets. It’s a pain but very fixable. You’ll be fine.

Have there ever been pets in the house? Indorex supposed to be good for treating the house

EmmaSwann · 31/07/2018 19:14

Pop down your local vets and buy a can if Indorex. That'll sort the little beggars out!

No idea why you've got them if you don't have pets though.

Racecardriver · 31/07/2018 19:25

My DH once brought some home after visiting friends who had a cat.

HouseOfHorrors · 31/07/2018 19:31

You can pick them up on yourself and your clothes, if you are unlucky and have walked where they are/ visited someone with them in their house or even on their clothes. Don't be embarrassed you don't have them because you didn't treat pets (since you don't have pets).

HouseOfHorrors · 31/07/2018 19:32

Oh and I agree - you want something from the vets to treat it. Most over counter stuff isn't strong enough.

mimibunz · 31/07/2018 19:34

Just a few fleas! Smile We joke about them in our house. The cat doesn’t have them but we do!

MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly · 31/07/2018 19:40

If you don't have pets I don't think they will be around long - I don't think humans can act as a host.

Our cats had them once and their beds had a few in - I'd second Indorex - great stuff.

Gwenhwyfar · 31/07/2018 19:42

"I don't think humans can act as a host."

I'm pretty sure they can!

MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly · 01/08/2018 07:34

No, we don't have enough hair for them to live and breed in. They bite humans (obviously) but would need a household pet to live long-term and reproduce on.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 01/08/2018 07:42

Fleas are really specialized - they can bite humans and live on their blood but they won’t breed on you and their reproductive capacity will be much reduced. Flea bomb, Hoover, and the survivors will eventually die off. Pesky while you have them though!

NynaeveSedai · 01/08/2018 07:43

If you don't have pets then they are just hitchhikers. Gross though!

Catzpyjamas · 01/08/2018 07:51

Fleas do not live on a host - they only jump on to feed (bite). You could have carried one in from anywhere.
Wash all bedding etc , vacuum every nook and cranny then empty the vacuum cleaner outside straight away and then treat the whole house with a spray like Indorex which you can get from Amazon, pet shops or the vets. You would be best to get a spray containing Permethrin (kills adult fleas) and Pyripoxyfen (controls growth of eggs).

CutesyUserName · 01/08/2018 13:59

Indorex spray (can get it from Amazon) is the best. I've tried lots of different types over the years and this is by far the most effective. It has the added benefit of killing spiders too.

It could be that someone in your house has been somewhere with fleas and brought them back or you've had a visitor who's brought them in.

longwayoff · 01/08/2018 14:05

Flea eggs can hang around unhatched until the temperature is right. In the floorboard cracks maybe. Ugh.

Holidayshopping · 01/08/2018 14:06

Hmmm, we have some at he moment- but I can blame the cats!

What flea bombs do people recommend?
