Change from gas hob... need to convince DH

We currently have a gas hob and though I like the gas, it's SUCH a pain in the arse to clean - so fiddly, multiple bits, gets manky again straight away after cleaning. I hate it and when we move I'd like a nice, easily cleanable hob, especially since I'm pregnant and will have a year's mat leave using the hob all hours of the day, and I don't want to be constantly cleaning it!

Any recommendations for a non-gas hob which is safer around little ones? I know DH is also worried about them burning themselves on a hot hob...

No hobs are safe around little ones. Generally it's not the hob but the pans and their handles that are the danger, and even the best electric induction hobs will still burn as although the glass won't be heated by the induction coil, it will be back-heated by the hot pots. So that's not useful as a real justification.

We've always used stainless steel gas hobs at home (all other types elsewhere so fully experienced), and they're barely harder to clean than a glass slab electric hob. Lift the pot stand, wipe with a non-scouring sponge. Enamel ones are harder to look after, avoid them.

Any type of hob will be hard to clean if you let gunk burn on and build up, so make the post-cook cleanup part of the ritual - get the partner who didn't cook to do it as their share, as well as sort the other washing up.If you do it every time it'll just be a wipe with a tiny amount of scrub.

Things that help are lids on pots and pans, attempting to avoid boilovers (easier with the adjustability of gas than any other hob), and for frying get one of those mesh 'covers' that looks like an outside flat sieve - they catch almost all the spitting oil.

Finally, all other types of hob are awful to work with compared to gas. IMHO, obviously, but I'm right! Halo

Whackytaco · 29/07/2018 22:46

No! Stick with gas hobs. Much easier snd safer.
We bought a house with an induction top. I bloody hate it but it's fairly new and was well looked after so can't justify getting rid of it yet. Can't wait for to get gas back.
Much easier to clean by miles.

Babdoc · 29/07/2018 22:46

Another vote for gas hobs here! Modern stainless steel ones are really easy to wipe clean. Gas is just so much more controllable than elec ones.

AprilShowers16 · 29/07/2018 22:47

I much prefer gas hobs to electric (currently have electric). You can control the temperature much better when cooking and they don’t stay hot after you’ve turned them off so safer around children.

OuEstPierreLapin · 29/07/2018 22:50

I recently replaced gas with and induction one. Would never go back. More control, faster, safer, easier to clean. It's brilliant. Wish I had done it sooner.

SophieGiroux · 29/07/2018 23:07

I've got an induction hob after having gas with all the little fiddly nooks and crannies. Now just have glass. It is such a breeze to clean, just a wipe and it's done. It also adjusts really quickly to temperature changes unlike old electric hobs so just like gas in that respect. Definitely recommend it if you hate cleaning like me Smile

WilmaJean · 30/07/2018 03:47

I vote induction. Much safer than gas and just as responsive (if not more so). They are the only two types of hob I've considered when replacing and I've ended up plumping for induction the last two times, and I've not regretted it - so easy to clean and can double as extra worktop if needed! I've had the misfortune of moving in to properties with ceramic or electric and hated them... fairly quickly replaced and I'm a happy cook again! There are some annoying induction controls though so do your research (a friend has one that can only be turned up and then hits a point where it goes to 0 and counts up again - so turning the heat down or off is annoying!)

yorkshireyummymummy · 30/07/2018 04:00

I had never had any thing other than gas since I got my first house 8n 1988. Loved it, swore by it, e
Moved to a gas free village three years ago so I had no option but to go electric......and I love it.
MUCH cleaner and lets face it, much safer.
Shop around and find one that suits you ( ie how many ‘rings’ do you want etc. There’s SO much choice.
My mum- who had always sworn by gas stayed at my house last year to look after dog and DD. She had to cook with my electric hob. She has had a new kitchen and to my amazement went electric as she just loved it.
Obviously it’s each to their own but I highly reccomend them.

Induction. DH persuaded me ( I think he thought it looked like cooking on an iPad) . A decent one is just as responsive as gas , so much easier to clean , no worrying if you've turned it off and cool when pans not on it , so , safe. No hob of whatever sort will get over the problem of a DC pulling over a pan but I reckon induction is about as safe as it gets if you had e.g. an island with a hob on it. I was very very firmly a gas girl , but this induction thing has converted me. What you don't get is the whole I am cooking with fire domestic goddess thing but as I get older I'd rather it was easier to clean Grin & yes just extra counter space when you aren't cooking. Mine is 4 pan places side by side in a rectangle so no leaning over to get a pan from the back. ( Caveat My kitchen space is not huge - i.e. not a massive huge country aga type kitchen )

I do realise after all that - other opinions are available Grin

B00dyM4ry · 30/07/2018 05:18

Induction hobs are the business- as responsive as gas but only need a quick wipe to clean- i will never go back.

Electric hobs have moved on so much and lots of people don't realise how fab induction are and are out of step. Can you try one out at a friends house?

B00dyM4ry · 30/07/2018 05:19

Get a good one though - i have a Seimens which was about £900.

sulflower · 30/07/2018 05:30

We've got a touch hob, no knobs and it is a major pain in the arse. Yes wonderful to keep clean but I wish we'd gone for gas.

I hate hate hate our (don't know what of electric type) hob with touch controls. They are an absolute bastard to control. I must admit, the cooking is an improvement on the old element style electric top the landlord replaced, but the control is impossible - press this to wake up the controls, press the right ring control, slide finger along temp control. Get cross because it won't do what you want, finally get there, wait for thing to reset then start on the next ring you want to control. Fantisising about my gas hob back in the UK.

strawberrisc · 30/07/2018 06:13

I found gas late in life. My Mum hated it! I house-sit a lot and can’t stand electric hobs anymore. Gas all the way.

AJPTaylor · 30/07/2018 06:16

i am looking for
work specifically motivated by my hatred of the electric hob in our new house and the desire to replace it with a gas hob.

specialsubject · 30/07/2018 14:16

I do far less cleaning with a gas hob as it can be controlled. old electric one was boiling over or cold, useless.

cheaper to run, too - a £35 bottle of lpg lasts 8 months.

notenoughbottletonight · 30/07/2018 15:23

Stick with your gas hob! I've had electric ones before and even burnt myself on them 🤦‍♀️

NamedyChangedy · 31/07/2018 18:26

INDUCTION ALL THE WAY!

I've had an induction hob since we got our new kitchen in Jan, and spent last week in a holiday cottage with gas. I nearly killed us all - when cleaning, I nudged a knob and inadvertently left the gas on for several minutes. I was terrified it would start a fire. I also started a small fire while trying to cook some sausages, and burned quite a few dishes from having the gas on too high. Admittedly I'm clumsy / forgetful but it just shouldn't be possible, surely?

I love the predictability and safety of induction once you get used to it (and it's SO easy to clean), and I suspect some of the criticism on here is related to old school electric / ceramic rather than electromagnetic heat, which induction uses - a whole different kettle of fish!

Davros · 31/07/2018 20:40

Stick all the bits on the gas hob, including the knobs, in the dishwasher.

OuEstPierreLapin · 03/08/2018 10:28

NamedyChangedy

Bingo. There's a lot of misunderstanding about electric ceramic and induction. Completely different things. Induction is more responsive, safer and faster than gas. The black electric ceramic surfaces with hot red rings are meh.

5000KallaxHoles · 03/08/2018 12:18

Love my induction hob - hate the touch controls just because the sensitivity on them sometimes feels a bit erratic... finger pressing the bit =no way, boob brushes on the edge of the worktop = instant response. But for ease of cleaning and ease of use - no way I'd go back to gas (I hate having to fiddle about with all the bits to clean my old gas hob).

BareBelliedSneetch · 03/08/2018 12:20

Induction hob!

We replaced the gas one here as soon as we moved in.

Induction is so much easier to control, and could not be easier to clean. I don’t understand how anyone can find a gas hob easier to clean than induction!

GlitterRollerSkate · 03/08/2018 12:24

We're in the induction vs gas hob debate too! My husband can break anything. Can an induction hob stand up to pans being dropped on them repeatedly? I have never met someone as clumsy as him! I am firmly in the gas corner but he is trying to sway me!!
