A friend of mine had the same problem somshe made a fruit fly trap. Put some apple cider vinegar in a jar with cling film over the top and make some holes in the cling film so the flies can get in. She said it trapped loads. Let me know if it works

TheEmmaDilemma · 29/07/2018 22:00

Find the thing that's rotting?

dancemom · 29/07/2018 22:03

I have these constantly also! Make traps, get rid of them and within days they are back again - it's a nightmare!

Cover all perishable food. Clean pet food bowl when they have finished eating. Spray, spray and spray again.

gamerchick · 29/07/2018 22:04

Problem is they could be hatching out of all sorts. The last plague I had was coming from a big pot plants soil I was particularly fond of. I had to get rid of it. Sad they like stagnant water, old mops, drains, all sorts.

hazeydays14 · 29/07/2018 22:06

I had this problem in a student house.. we had a rarely used damp sponge mop and they laid their eggs in there 🤢 apparently they love damp sponge...

A jar with cider apple vinegar and cling film with a few holes poked in worked best for us.. persist until they all go away..

Iv emptied the house of any food that might be left out like fruit and veg, iv given my guinea pig away Sad iv set up some traps I don't have a mop bucket we have a steam cleaner iv poured bleach down plug holes we don't have any plants in the house I'm going crazy!

There's a difference between fruit flies and fungus gnats. If you have fungus gnats, which like to live in pot plants and compost, making a trap out of sweet things or getting rid of your fruit bowl won't work. Either way, try to find the source and get some sticky paper to trap them on.

zombie999 · 29/07/2018 22:19

But we don't have any plants or compost anywhere?

Buy a bottle of malt vinegar from Lidl for 30p and take the lid off. They'll all fly in.

RyvitaBrevis · 30/07/2018 07:24

Sorry, our posts crossed there. If there's nowhere for them to live, keep doing what you're doing and they'll go away eventually! Flowers

schnubbins · 30/07/2018 17:09

I go after them with the vacuum cleaner when they are there and other than that leave nothing sweet/wine etc out on the counters and buy only fruit as we need it in the summer .

Floozymum · 30/07/2018 17:12

If you haven't got any fruit out then they might be drain flies, they look really similar. I had a nest down our sink pipe and they kept coming up from there. A drain unblocker did the job!

TwoBlueShoes · 30/07/2018 17:14

Keep all food in the fridge or in containers.

Cover your kitchen bin with a lid, no food in other bins.

Clean out your drains with drain cleaner.

Set up traps for them.

So today I have been on a mad one. I have drenched the kitchen in bleach. The sink holes the skirting boards to cupboards the fridge the bin the floors. I had to send my DD to grandmas just to scrub everything then went nuts with fly spray. I now have one of those ugly fly tapes hanging from the ceiling and the house is still covered in them. After blitzing the kitchen My DD left a croissant on the side so I quickly got rid of it and as soon as I got to it hundreds of flies flew off it.
